Died this Thursday (31), at the age of 78, the photographer Patrick Demarchelier. One of the biggest names in international fashion photography, he became known for his portraits of celebrities such as Madonna, Princess Diana and Gisele Bundchen. In addition to his editorial repertoire – which included collaborations for the American edition of rolling stone– Demarchelier was also responsible for iconic music album covers.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Patrick Demarchelier this March 31, 2022, at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife Mia, their three children, Gustaf, Arthur and Victor, and three grandchildren,” said the post on his official Instagram profile. The cause of death was not announced.
French based in New York in the 1970s, Demarchelier soon became one of the most important names in global fashion, collaborating with titles such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaarand vanity fairin addition to clicking campaigns for brands such as Chanel, Versace and Louis Vuittonamong many.
In music, his photos graced album covers over four decades. The oldest dating back to 1985 by AllMusic.com. From his early work, mainly done for Billy joel, he soon moved on to clicking for names like Madonna (in I’m Breathless), Celine Dion (in A New Day Has Come), Whitney Houston (in I Will Always Love You: The Best of Whitney Houston) and Britney Spears (In The Zone/Circus). Other song names he collaborated with include Elton John, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.
