Suicidal Tendencies: Mike Muir explains the meaning behind the band’s name

The band’s vocalist cited his skateboarder brother to explain the choice of name for the group

It is common to search for Suicidal Tendencies on search engines and come across a result different from that related to the band. The vocalist Mike Muir revealed the meaning behind the American group’s eccentric name in an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil.

“My brother was a professional skateboarder,” the singer began, mentioning Jim Muir. “And he used to say, ‘Go ahead, don’t let your fear stop you.'”

It’s really like skateboarding: when you’re down there, it doesn’t seem so bad, but when you get up there… Or when you’re going to jump into the water: when you’re up there, it seems ten times higher and scarier. That fear stops you from doing things — and sometimes that’s good, sometimes it’s bad.

For Muirbelieving in yourself and allowing yourself to live new experiences is like actually giving yourself space to a suicidal tendency. “If you put me on skis — and I’ve never been on skis — that would be crazy,” he exemplified. Fear, however, could prevent you from doing a fun activity: “There are people who stop before they start.”

“To us, suicide means breaking down those barriers so you can become the person you want to be,” he continued. “People are crazy for the wrong reasons when they don’t follow their dreams.”

The real reason to be crazy is when your teachers don’t believe in you, when your politicians don’t believe in you… They don’t want to believe in you and they don’t want you to believe in yourself. They want you to believe that you need them. They want you to think that you’re not good enough.
