July 13th is World Rock Day, and to celebrate, we went on the road with the band Viper to bring the experience of touring musicians to Homework.
It all started earlier than you might think, with an appointment scheduled for 8 am to load the van and leave São Paulo for Campinas. We left São Paulo at 9:30 am and after a little over an hour of travel we arrived at Parque Taquaral, in Campinas, the location of the Viper presentation.
The soundcheck was scheduled for 11am on the day, but when we got there the first thing we saw was the whole light structure still on the ground, so we unloaded the van, checked the dressing room and started setting up the drums and stage monitors. During this break I took the opportunity to take some pictures and ask some musicians to talk while they were preparing their instruments.
After everything was assembled, the soundcheck was done, quickly but professionally. It’s a bit strange to see the artists on stage being people like us, dressed normally, and then to see them show off in their stage clothes.
After the sound check we all went to have lunch in a Portuguese restaurant. There is a lot of socializing and conversations about all kinds of topics, both in the van and in the restaurant, and it is incredible to see the happiness of the musicians and the team. After lunch we all went to the hotel to rest and wait for the show.
This World Rock Day party, called Rock na Concha, was produced by Central do Rock, with the support of the city of Campinas. Viper were the main attraction of the night and before them the bands Fogo 51, Cidadão José, EBSN, Cólera and Kamala took the stage.
It’s nice to see a band that I first met in the late 80’s when I became a fan, still active and putting on a great show!
Check out the video for some footage from Viper’s show in Campinas and the pre-show coverage I did during the stage setup and sound check.
