Stewart Copeland on The Police: “We Were Three Idiots in the Studio”
Stewart Copelandiconic drummer of Policehe ruled out any meeting between him, Sting AND Andy Summers For “honorable reasons”but who remains a great friend to musicians, as long as they never have to work together again.
Sting, Andy Summers AND Stewart Copeland They disbanded in 1986 after a period of great success in the music industry. They later reunited in 2003 and 2007 and this year performed at the Brazil with a great show at Maracana.
“It was poisonous” He said Copeland on his experience with the band in the 80s in a recent interview with Daily espresso. “We were as big as a band could be and everyone thought we were three golden gods with heavenly lights shining in our eyes. But in that studio we were three idiots with no respect for each other. We were violent and we went crazy.” said the musician 70 years old.
And he continued, providing more details on the situation: “It wasn’t anything physical, it was a frozen silence between us. We were mourning the friendship and camaraderie we once shared.”
Copeland he also explained in an interview that the belief of Police In music he maintained high quality standards and later managed to analyze the talent of his bandmates from another perspective: “What I learned from studying this orchestral music is that Sting is a real songwriter. I didn’t pay attention to that in the past. I was just banging stuff out from the back of the stage. All I saw was the back of Sting’s head. Sting, so I didn’t know much about what he was singing. Now, I realize the depth that these songs bring, which is also due to Andy’s sophisticated contribution.”
The things inside Police began to collapse in the 1980s, when Sting became the trio’s main composer: “When he brought[his songs]to the band, he had to make some compromises, because Andy and I could have ideas too. It became harder and harder for Sting to deal with them. In fact, we were very lucky to have Sting stay strong for So Long. By the end of the Zenyatta Mondatta album, we were playing stadiums and we were as big as we could be, and that’s how fair it is.”
