According to the drummer, his attitude bothered grohl: “He just said, ‘You know what? I’ll tell you right now. That’s the way things are. It’s f**** my band. If you don’t like it, f**k.’ And I said, ‘Alright, I’m leaving the band then.’”
Hawkins remembered that grohl reacted with a “yes, of course yes” look and then gave him a list of songs that needed to be completed in the next few weeks. However, after presenting with the Foo Fighters at Coachella, Hawkins went to watch grohl play drums on tour Queens of the Stone Age – and everything changed.
“I finally went to see him play the Queens of Stone Age,” commented. “At first I thought he was making the group a great band – and he was. So I also had to deal with the situation that, ‘Oh, there’s the best drummer in the world again.’”
Seeing the performance of grohl, Hawkins gave up leaving the Foo Fighters: “[Pensei:] ‘I’m just an idiot who does what he says and tries to play ‘everlong‘ as well as he, but he can’t.’ I went to see him play with the queens [of Stone Age]and that meant a lot to him.”
“I didn’t know it at the time, but it really meant it. He never told me that, because we don’t have that kind of conversation – that would be uncomfortable and awkward. But I think it meant a lot to him. […] So we played it the next night, and he was the front man again, and we rocked it,” concluded the musician.
Hawkins died suddenly last Friday, March 25th, while the Foo Fighters getting ready for a show at a festival in Colombia.
