The selection brings together new bands and releases from veteran artists such as The Jesus and Mary Chain and the singers of the group Lush
The Modern Playlist is a curated selection of fresh, alternative sounds from 50 recent music videos. This week’s list is a celebration of the guitar days of bands with portable amps and powerful pedals, starting with light grunge and shoegazer, moving on to shoegazer psychedelia, twee, guitar-driven synthpop and lo-fi variations inspired by 80s and 90s indie, before focusing on the different shades of dreampop, from danceable lethargy to self-celebratory melancholy, and finishing with trip-hop and ethereal folk.
Veterans of Noise
The list contains new tracks from veterans of the original 80s indie scene, including Australian band Crowded House, Scottish siblings The Jesus and Mary Chain and two members of the wonderful London band Lush, Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, who are soloists, as well as artists from the 90s, such as British band Bôa, American Film School, Belgian Hooverphonic, Danish genius Trentemøller. Among the representatives of the millennial generation, the Americans The Umbrellas, Still Corners, Magic Wands and Federale, the English Blossoms and Lucy Rose, Scottish bard Hamish Hawk, New Zealand siblings Angus & Julia Stone and German Kraków Loves Adana stand out. out. The Third Sound and Internacional Music – although less celebrated, this one attracts special attention for its unusual collision of mod psychedelia and krautrock.
The new generation
Newcomers include the Japanese band Dead by Inches, who opens the selection, their compatriots Forbear, the “American Smiths” Brigitte Calls Me Baby, the Danish band Kindside, who takes up the twee tradition of Scandinavian indie (and the name of the singer is Nina in the role of the singer of the Cardigans), the Welsh trio Ski Lift, the English shoegaze quartet Cruush, the London duo Deary, the Canadian duo Teenage Art Scene (Rupert Yakelashek) and Talia Fay, declared fans of Belle and Sebastian, the English quintet Night Swimming and the Swedish band Abstract Crimewave, which is actually the new name of the old partnership between Björn Yttling (of the trio Peter Bjorn and John) and Joakim Åhlund (Caesars/Teddybears), formerly known as Smile. In the atmosphere of a Swedish supergroup, they appear with a collaboration with the singer Lykke Li. And speaking of collaborations, the list also includes a single from the dreampop project that unites New Zealand singer Mayzie with Australian group Oceans, and a partnership between RIINSE. (Australian Joe Agius) and American singer Caroline Loveglow.
The band in the photo
The band that illustrates the post is the Texas band Blushing. Made up of two couples, the quartet presents the latest song from the sessions for their third album, “Sugarcoat”. The recordings took place at Austin Community College, where producer and engineer Elliott Frazier was teaching classes. Since it was recorded at a college, the recording of the song “Slyce” took place in front of a student audience, with Elliott explaining to the class what he was doing on the console, which inspired the band to move in an experimental direction.
