black bird officially debuted on Apple TV + as the streamer’s new high-profile drama series, which has enlisted big names as stars with Taron Egerton starring Jimmy Keene and late Ray Liotta like his father on screen. Of course, with the series inspired by true events and centered around the dynamic between Jimmy and suspected serial killer Larry in prison, the show had to find the right actor to play the killer alongside Egerton. Showrunner and executive producer Dennis Lehane spoke to Gossipify about how the team struggled to find the right star.
The new limited series with Paul Walter Hauser from me, Tony Yes cobra-kai celebrity to play suspected serial killer Larry Hall, behind bars for a murder but suspected of being guilty of many others. With Jimmy d’Egerton tasked with extracting a confession and locating Larry’s bodies while they were behind bars together, the characters had to be intriguing on their own and together. When I spoke to Dennis Lehane about Jimmy and Larry’s casting, he revealed that there was no chemistry reading for them and then continued:
We wanted Taron from the start, because he’s an ideal role. You have to have someone who, like in his thirties, knows how to play like a boy because he is more of a boy than a man when he first meets him, but who also knows how to play danger and play calculus. We needed someone charismatic. We needed an actor who was hungry to play the part, you know, he really wanted it. And we found all these things in Taron.
Taron Egerton has recovered black bird with a lot of film experience in different genres and even played a film version of a real person when played Elton John for rocket . However, the Apple TV + series deviates from what the actor has dealt with previously. According to the executive producer, the team quickly realized it had the right combination of qualities to fit this story, which was inspired by creepy real events. (Another star has already explained how the show avoided exploiting the victims behind the true story .)
Egerton was one half of the Jimmy / Larry duo, but what about the Paul Walter Hauser cast? Dennis Lehane continued, sharing that Egerton was actually a big believer in Hauser getting the role … after the executive producer found a “creepy” way for Hauser to prove he has what it takes to play. the character. Lehan said:
Once Taron was cast, he, I and one of the producers, Bradley Thomas, started focusing on Paul. And I was holding him back for a while because I said, ‘I need to see that Paul can do it.’ I’ve seen that he’s a great actor, but Larry is a titanic role. So I asked Paul to read me Larry’s three creepiest scenes and he blew me away. And then Taron said, ‘This is the boy, this is the boy. Don’t worry about the chemistry, I’ll have the chemistry. And they came out early, so they could establish chemistry, but then it was all there on the screen. They are just great actors.
it was clear the teaser that the dynamic between Jimmy and Larry would be central to the series, with Jimmy trying to befriend the convicted killer and extort a confession in hopes of gaining his freedom. All Paul Walter Hauser had to do to prove Dennis Lehane that he was up to the challenge of playing Larry was to read the character’s three most disturbing scenes. According to the producer, Taron Egerton was determined to choose Hauser.
Viewers will have to keep watching the new episodes on Friday to see what kind of chemistry the two actors have generated for their extremely unusual character dynamics, and it should be a real journey. In addition to Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser and Ray Liotta, black bird (opens in a new tab) with Greg Kinnear and Sepideh Moafi.
