Alberto Barbera confesses to being struck by the creativity and courage of Todd Phillips’ new film
The Venice Film Festival revealed this Tuesday (23/7) a sensational selection for its 2024 edition, including “Joker”, the long-awaited sequel to “Joker” (2019) starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
Alberto Barbera, the festival’s director, expressed great enthusiasm for Todd Phillips’ film, which will be presented at the competitive Venice Film Festival. In an interview with Deadline, Barbera commented that the sequel will surprise audiences with its unique approach. “It’s the continuation of the story, but the film is completely different from the first. If you expect the same thing in terms of violence or other elements, you will be surprised,” he said.
A new approach
Barbera described “Joker” as a dystopian musical, a rarity in recent American cinema. “I think it’s one of the most daring, courageous, creative films in recent American cinema. And I think it really confirms Todd Phillips as one of the most creative directors working today,” he praised.
The reaction of the critics
According to Barbera, the film stunned everyone in the Los Angeles theater. “When I saw the film in Los Angeles in early February, there were four or five of us in the screening room, including the screenwriter Scott Silver, and we were all amazed. At the end of the screening, our mouths were open. It’s a darker film,” he said.
Oscar potential
Asked about the 2025 Oscars chances of “Joker: Delirium for Two,” Barbera expressed confidence in the film’s potential. “I would be surprised if it wasn’t recognized by the Academy,” he concluded.
