Singer talks about recording new album, which will be released on platforms in September, evaluates career and more

About to release a new album, the Canadian artist Nelly Furtado reflected on his career and commented on his relationship with his eldest daughter, Nevis Furtadowhich has played an important role in the singer’s work.

Furtado received the British magazine NME at her record label the day after performing at a festival in Malta. She talked about how she got back into production: “I hadn’t stepped foot in a studio for about three years, but something told me I had to get back into it,” she said. Her last album had been The Ride2017. After that, Nelly Furtado was busy with motherhood after the birth of her other two children.

I knew I wanted to make an album that reminded me of the vibes and energy you get at a soundcheck when you hear your voice coming back to you loud from the speakers,” the singer said.

The Canadian spoke about the role of Nevis Furtado when asked precisely what motivated her to return to the studios. “She was discovering her passion for music while I was rediscovering mine, so she kind of kept me in check,” she said.

Nelly Furtado also revealed that her daughter gave her suggestions about the work. “She would say, ‘Mom, why are you using Auto-Tune on this song? You think it sounds cool, but it doesn’t,” she said with a laugh. “She also reminded me that people love my music because it’s three-dimensional, which made me dig even deeper.”

The new album, 7arrives on platforms at the end of September. But the singer has already revealed two songs that are part of the work. “Love Bites” was launched in May and is the result of a collaboration with Tove Lo and the producer SG Lewis.

Nelly said that Lewis approached her for a collaboration and sent her an unfinished track. He suggested asking a friend to redo the chorus, and the singer replied that she would only accept if that friend was Tove Lo. The result was the trio work. “Tove simply surprised me with the quality of her voice,” said the singer.

SG Lewis also guest starred on another track on the new album, but Nelly said she’s not ready to reveal the title.

The other song from the work that has already been released is “Heart”which came out in July and is also the result of a partnership, this time with the Colombian duo Stereo Bomb. According to the singer, this is the only song on the album to include lyrics in Spanish. But she revealed that she has another recording with the duo and has not ruled out working entirely in the language in the future.

This would not be new in Nelly Furtado’s career. In 2009 she released My Planwhich was perceived by English speakers as a work of less potential than its predecessor Looseproduced alongside Timbaland and which included global successes “Maneater”, “Promiscuous” It is “Say It Right”. This last track, in fact, went viral again in 2022 on the social network TikTok. It was Nevis Furtado who warned her mother about its growing popularity among Generation Z.

Commenting on the success of LooseNelly Furtado assessed that the work was influential because it represented a change in pop style. “We didn’t want it to sound perfect. We wanted it to sound real,” she says. “The idea was to put my psychedelic, melancholic melodies and lyrics over Tim’s heavy beats and make a kind of mix within that.”

Although Nelly reunited with Timbaland in 2007 for the hit “Give It To Me”which also featured Justin Timberlake, there was no full sequel to Loose. That’s where it came from My Planthe singer’s most successful LP to date.

Looking back on her own career, including her upcoming work, Nelly Futado defines herself as a “chameleon” who “doesn’t believe in genres.” Since being diagnosed with ADHD in 2022, she says she understands her creative process much better.

I understand that ‘been there, done that’ thing. And then I think, ‘What’s the next challenge? What’s going to make this unique from the last experience?'”

While promoting 7, the singer is also preparing a vinyl reissue of her 2000 debut album, Whoa, Nelly!which will be released on August 9th.

“It’s hard to get back into that kind of creative space, but this is where my long breaks between albums really pay off. You get to step away, live your life and remember why you do this again,” he concludes.
