Singer became known for advocating for diet and lifestyle, but in 2020 she became a pescetarian
Increasingly common, veganism has become a trend even among celebrities, whether for ethical or health reasons. Miley Cyrus has been on this list since 2013, promoting a lifestyle by discouraging the use of anything of animal origin.
The singer began using her social media to promote the diet and on several occasions discussed the reasons that led her to adopt it. She even had a birthday celebrated by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), a well-known organization that fights for animal rights.
However, Cyrus announced in 2020 that she had given up on the diet. According to her, health issues led her to make such a decision.
“Brain wasn’t working properly”
In an interview with the podcast The Joe Rogan Experiencetranscribed by The ThingsCyrus revealed that she had adopted the pescetarian diet — similar to vegetarianism/veganism, but with the consumption of fish and fish products. The artist justified the change by saying:
I had to introduce fish and omegas into my life because my brain wasn’t working properly.”
Despite the curious way in which she said “my brain wasn’t working properly,” the singer went deeper and stated that she suffered from hip pain, which she said was the result of malnutrition. Shortly before the change, Cyrus also stated that she felt low on energy during a performance at the Glastonbury festival.
Finally, the singer revealed that she cried when she ate her first fish after changing her diet because she considered these animals to be intelligent — it was one of the reasons she became vegan. At least, Miley says she has felt “much healthier” since then.
Some studies carried out over the last few years (via BBC) show that the vegan diet may be lacking in some nutrients essential for brain function, such as heme iron, which is only found in animal protein and is more easily absorbed by the body. In addition, vegans may be subject to deficiencies in some vitamins, such as omega-3, selenium, folic acid and iodine.
Other celebrities who gave up veganism
Other famous names that followed the same path as Miley Cyrus. A good example is Liam Hemsworththe singer’s ex-husband. He was the one responsible for grilling the first fish the singer ate after becoming a pescetarian — and it ended in her crying. The actor also cited health issues as the reason for abandoning the diet.
There are also cases of celebrities who gave up on their diets and then resumed them later. This was the case of actresses Anne Hathawaydue to the recordings of Interstellar (2013), and Natalie Portmanas a result of her pregnancy.
Other celebrities who have embraced and abandoned veganism include Waka Flocka Flame, Samuel L. Jackson, Carrie Underwood and Gisele Bundchen.
