Taika Waititi Thor: Love And Thunder features what you might call a bittersweet ending. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor defeats his ultimate antagonist and his life moves on in a positive light as he takes responsibility for caring for Gorr’s daughter, but the hero must also say goodbye to the woman he loves. While the blockbuster’s post-credits scene reveals that she went to Valhalla, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is dead … although she didn’t die without whispering a few goodbye words to the God of Thunder.
The Marvel movie doesn’t reveal what Jane Foster quietly says to Thor before he dies because the Avenger is the only person who hears it and doesn’t spread the message, but Natalie Portman assured us that a) it was a joke. specifically what she said in her co-star’s ear, and b) that she’s never going to reveal what she said.
I interviewed Taika Waititi and the stars of Thor: love and thunder during the Los Angeles press day for the new Marvel movie, and it was at the end of my time with Natalie Portman that our conversation turned into spoiler territory. When I asked about Jane Foster’s latest whisper to Thor, I asked if it was a specific line and an experience on set, and Portman said:
Yes, that scene was very, very fun to shoot, and yes, there is a specific line, but I will never reveal it.
In Thor: love and thunder, Jane Foster receives a shocking introduction when it is revealed that she has stage 4 cancer. Against Thor’s request, she prepares for the final battle against Christian Bale’s Gorr The God Butcher and, although they are victorious, the effort takes everything Jane has left behind. As she is dying, she whispers what she claims to be her new royal catchphrase (somewhat during the film), but the audience is unaware of what she is saying.
Since we never hear what she’s saying, it’s certainly nice to know that Natalie Portman didn’t just say “rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb” in Chris Hemsworth’s ear (unless, for some obscure reason, this isn’t her new slogan). As for the secret that remains secret, I will be curious to see how long it will last.
If we’re generous, only three people in the world can know what Jane Foster whispered to Thor: Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi … but to paraphrase Mark Twain, three people can only keep a secret if two of them are dead. It is very likely that all of them will be questioned online for many years, and one of them will eventually break it and abandon it. Or maybe it’s a revelation that will be saved when Mighty Thor makes some sort of triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a few years’ time.
The whisper at the end of lost in translation it couldn’t be kept secret for long, and it looks like there will be even more pressure for a revelation with a blockbuster as big as Thor: love and thunder.
