The legend of rock’n’roll Richie Valente is about to make his triumphant return to the big screen. THE Very Mas Mediain collaboration with the Sony Pictures, development is beginning on a remake of the iconic 1987 film, The Bamba.

The original, which received a Golden Globe nomination, is based on the life of Valente and made history by portraying the meteoric rise of the Mexican-American singer.

Famed writer and director Luis Valdez, creator of the original film, will be involved as an executive producer in the new project. José Rivera, nominated for an Oscar for his work in Motorcycle diaries AND On the roadwas chosen to write the screenplay, promising to bring a fresh perspective to Valens’ story.

The original film starred Lou Diamond Phillips as Valens, exploring his journey from a young farmhand to a rock star with a string of chart-topping hits. The new version seeks to relive these historic moments and pay homage to the lasting impact of Valens’ music.

The project promises to update the narrative, maintaining the spirit of the original production, but with a modern approach capable of attracting a new generation of viewers.

The remake is produced by Javier Chapa for Mucho Mas Media, with Sherrese Clarke Soares, Phillip Braun, Robert Muñoz, Simon Wise, Vincent Cordero and Bruce Barshop as executive producers. Sony Music Mexico also joins the project as a creative partner, ensuring that the film’s soundtrack resonates with the authenticity of Valens’ music.

The original film The Bamba was acclaimed not only for its gripping narrative but also for its musical presentation. The soundtrack, which features Valens’ classic songs performed by Los Lobos, received widespread acclaim and contributed to the film’s popularity.
