Legendary Iron Maiden bassist reflected on how he composes music and also said he encourages young musicians to listen to as many references as possible
Steve Harris reflected on the way he composes music himself – and came up with some advice for young bass players. Owner of a unique style in front of the instrument in Iron Maidenhe told the podcast Scars and Guitars (via Ultimate Guitar) which is precisely in this, in creating their own identity, that beginning musicians should invest:
“Well, what I usually say is: listen to as many people as possible and don’t try to style yourself as someone specific. A lot of people say to me: ‘oh, I want to play like this…’ You shouldn’t do that.”

The musician continued: “You have to listen to a lot of different people and eventually, if you do it right, you’ll create your own style and sound. Otherwise, you’ll just have people saying, ‘Oh, you sound like someone else.'”
