Paulo Miklos’ opinion on hip-hop and his memories of Sabotage

Both worked together on the film ‘The Trespasser’, where the rapper acted as a sort of language consultant for the character of the eternal Titan.

Initially consecrated as a member of the Titans, Paulo Miklos also developed a career as an actor. This trajectory included working with the late rapper at the beginning of the century Sabotage. Both participated in the film The Invader (2002).

During Miklos’ participation in the Roda Viva program, TV Culturathe singer revealed how he met Sabotage on the set of the film directed by Beto Brant. The hip-hop icon, murdered in January 2003, was responsible for helping the rocker adapt his character’s language to a tone closer to what he wanted.

As per transcription of Rolling Stone BrazilPaul said:

The encounter with Sabotage was incredibly powerful. We experienced a very intense moment of creativity and discovery, because it was my first experience making a film. The Invader. Beto Brant called and introduced me to Sabotage precisely so we could rewrite all my lines and make them more street-like, more believable for the character. This also gave me the opportunity, as a first-time sailor, to jump in and get into the character with my own language.”

The Invader It was Miklos’ first experience in cinema, as well as Sabotage’s first time working on a project of this type. Paulo also commented on the connection that formed between him and the rapper, as well as his loss.

And we had an instant connection, because we were both in music and he knew my work and so we were together, let’s understand what’s going on here and so on. And those were very special moments, right? So, when we lost Sabotage, when he was murdered, it was a very deep sadness, an incredible talent and he’s a guy who is a reference for the whole new generation.”

Sabotage’s Legacy

Mauro Matthew of the SaintsSabotage – or Sabota – had a life of crime before breaking into rap. His most famous album is his second, Rap is Commitment!released in 2000. In a recent collaboration with fellow rapper EmicidePaulo Miklos had contact with part of the legacy of his former film set colleague.

The musician recalled:

I composed with Emicida on the album We Live in the Now (2017). And I went to show the finished song at Emicida’s HQ and stuff. And then I showed it to him, he got emotional and everything. I’m just opening this parenthesis to tell you here. He said to me: ‘Come with me back here, I have a mural, I have a giant painted Sabotage, I want to take a picture, me, you, in front of the mural’. I said: ‘Wow!’ He has a mural with Sabotage, it’s a very important reference for this whole generation.”

When asked about the importance of hip-hop to culture, Miklos gave his perspective and took the opportunity to talk more about what Sabotage represents within this movement. He also mentioned the success of Anísio, his character in The Invaderwhich wouldn’t have turned out the way it did without the rapper’s advice.

Does culture need (hip-hop)? Hip-hop is culture itself, right? It’s very strong, wonderful and has incredible poets. What I learned from Sabotage is this: he’s a great poet, you know? He has incredible ability, he’s a creative, dynamic guy, and he quickly understood what was happening and put his toolbox, as a poet, to work with my text there. So, he put five options for each possibility and they were all brilliant, like someone who hears people talking on the street and remembers those specific things, which will later be used in poetry. He brought that to the film. So it was very rich, people know my lines in the film by heart.”

Sabotage’s life ended prematurely, but his work lives on through his records – the most recent, posthumous, entitled Sabotagecame out in 2016 – and the films he participated in. In addition to The Invaderthe rapper performed in Carandiru (2003), where he plays the character Fuinha. His story was told in the documentaries Sabotage – Us (2013) and Sabotage: The Maestro of the Cannon (2015).

Paulo Miklos recently participated in the Titans reunion, but continues his solo career, in addition to continuing to act. He has participated in series and soap operas, in addition to having an extensive filmography. His most recent feature film, Missed hut (2024), features the musician in the role of São Paulo samba singer Adoniran Barbosa.
