Scrap at RiR: Palco Mundo’s main raw material comes from the recycling of refrigerators and cars

The 86 modules weighing 550 kg each that make up the structure of the main stage at Rock in Rio come from scrap metal

Artists aren’t kidding when they say they intend to “shake things up” and “shake structures” at music festivals. To keep the intention figuratively speaking, the production and supervision of these events are usually rigorous in the materials used. And one of them, in particular, is surprising: the steel used in Rock in Rio.

Pedro Torres, global director of communications and institutional relations at Gerdau, says that the 200 tons of steel that will support the festival’s main stage are made from recycled scrap metal. Reuse is part of the entire process, since the volume is the same that gave rise to the RiR World Stage 2022.

The executive guarantees that, since steel is a “100%” and “infinitely” recyclable material, it does not lose quality or characteristics, regardless of how many times it undergoes the recycling process.

“More than 70% of the steel produced in the company’s plants comes from scrap, and every ton produced in this way contributes to the reduction of 1.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions,” he explains.

Recycled steel comes from a variety of products, including refrigerators, stoves, cars AND truckamong others. For this transformation to occur, the scrap is melted in the furnaces present in the company’s plants and transformed into steel products. These 200 tons of steel are part of the scenography of Palco Mundo.

The recycling process continues

Steel recycling doesn’t stop at Palco Mundo. The 86 modules, each weighing 550 kg, that make up the structure can be transformed into new products after the festival. In addition to its use in large projects, the steel from Palco Mundo becomes scrap and, after a new recycling treatment, is reintroduced into the production process as rebar, nails, trusses, wires, bars and rolls.

“These items are used in industries from different sectors, such as civil construction and infrastructure, household appliances, aviation, solar and wind energy, semiconductors, among others,” lists Pedro Torres.

According to the executive, recycling scrap metal has a series of advantages to mitigate the effects of climate change. The main one is the reduction of 1.5 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per ton of steel. Torres cites data from the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), according to which the global average for the sector is almost 2 tons of carbon per ton of steel.

In addition to the environmental impact, Torres adds that the adoption of the circular economy, in which there is transformation and reuse of materials already used, benefits 1 million people in Brazil through the generation of income and jobs.
