Gal Costa’s Widow and Son End Dispute Over Singer’s Inheritance

The legitimate heirs will divide all the assets and debts that appear in the artist’s inventory

After several exchanges of accusations, Wilma Petrillo and Gabriel Costa have presented an agreement to the São Paulo court to end the dispute over the inheritance of Gal Costa (1945-2022), which has been ongoing in Brazilian courts since last year. The information was released on Wednesday (18/9) by the magazine Contigo.

The agreement stipulates that the legitimate heirs will share all assets and debts that appear in the artist’s inventory. In addition, royalties from musical performances will be shared until the sale of Gal’s residence or up to one year after approval. The property will be put up for sale for a minimum value of R$8 million, but if it is not sold within six months, the value will change based on three independent appraisals.

As part of the agreement, Gabriel Costa agreed to renounce all legal actions he was taking against his stepmother, including a lawsuit in which he asked for the nullity of a document he signed, in which he recognized the stable union between Wilma and Gal. If the request were granted, the widow would lose her right to the inheritance.

Another part of the document provides that, after its approval, Gabriel will be the sole beneficiary of Gal Costa’s royalties, but the movable assets of the singer’s last home will be divided equally with the widow.

Before formalizing the agreement, the Court attempted a conciliation hearing between the parties, which did not occur.
