Susan Eubanks, mother of the late singer, accuses the band of not keeping promises and of ‘trying to erase the past’
After her son’s complaints, Chester Bennington’s mother has now expressed her discontent with Linkin Park after the band announced Emily Armstrong as their new singer. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Susan Eubanks said she felt “betrayed” by the group for not being informed about the band’s continuity and accused the members of “trying to erase her son’s past.”
Feeling of betrayal
Eubanks said the band promised to keep her informed of any plans to return, but that didn’t happen. “They told me if they did anything they’d let me know. They didn’t tell me and they probably knew I wouldn’t be happy,” she said. She also said she found out about Armstrong’s entry through a Google search.
Criticisms of the new singer
Speaking about Armstrong, Eubanks said he was uncomfortable with the new singer’s performance during a live broadcast. “I didn’t want to hear it. It was a moment where she was screaming a really high note and I got out of there as fast as I could,” he said. Eubanks also said his son had said Mike Shinoda thought the band’s songs would be better with a female singer.
Reaction of the public and family
The late singer’s son has previously been vocal in his criticism of the decision, accusing Shinoda of “erasing my father’s life and legacy in real time,” especially during Suicide Prevention Month. He also criticized the singer for her support of “That 70’s Show” actor and Church of Scientology member Danny Masterson during his rape trial.
Linkin Park revealed Emily Armstrong as lead singer in September, and the band’s new lineup debuted a show at the Forum in Los Angeles shortly afterward. Despite the controversy, critics like Variety’s Chris Willman praised the performance, calling the band’s new phase “a smart move.”
