Smith was born on December 28, 1934 in Ilford, Essex, and began a career in theater, more specifically in Oxford Playhousein the 1950s. However, she began to stand out on the scene when she migrated to the theater group Royal National Theaterwhere she worked alongside her husband, Robert Stephens.
Shortly afterwards, she also began to shine in cinemas. In 1969, he won Oscar of Best Actress for the role of Jean Brodie in Spring of a Spinsteradaptation of the book The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie directed by Ronald Neame.
