Pit Passarel, bassist and founder of the heavy metal band Viperdied this Friday (27), in Sao Paulo, at the age of 56. Battling pancreatic cancer, the news of his death was spread on the band’s official social networks, where his colleagues paid a moving tribute to the musician.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother Pit Passarell. Surrounded by family and lifelong friends. A life full of light, love, joy, talent and courage. We will miss you very much and the longing will be endless. Pit, our love for you will be eternal“, reads the message. The wake will take place at the funeral home, in the Bela Vista neighborhood of São Paulo, starting at 11 am this Friday.
Pit Passarell was a central figure in the development of heavy metal in Brazil. He founded Viper in 1985, together with his brother, Yves Passarell (guitarist of Capital Inicial), Andre Matos (vocals), Felipe Machado (guitar) and Cássio Audi (drums). Together, they made their mark on the São Paulo music scene and quickly became one of the most influential bands in the genre.
Viper held their first show at the Lira Paulistana theater, in São Paulo, and released the demo soon after The Killera swordwhich was a hit among fans. Over time, the band established itself as one of the forerunners of heavy metal in the state of São Paulo, gaining notoriety in Brazil and abroad.
Pit Passarell: Recognition and farewell
In addition to the band’s historical importance, Pit also stood out for his talent as a composer, being responsible for numerous songs and lyrics that marked the trajectory of Viper. Even with the departure of Andre Matos, who would later form Angra, the band remained active, touring and maintaining a loyal audience.
In 2012, Viper returned to the stage with the tour To live againresulting in the release of a live DVD recorded in Sao Paulo, celebrating his long career. Now, with the departure of Pit Passarell, the Brazilian metal community mourns the loss of one of its greats, but his musical legacy will remain alive, remembered by all those who loved his music and what he represented to the heavy metal scene.
