Leonardo AND Gil Eduardo Estevessons of the iconic Brazilian singer and composer Erasmo Carlos, began a legal battle against the artist’s widow, Fernanda Esteves. The musician, one of Jovem Guarda’s major references, died in November 2022 at the age of 81. Now her children are taking legal action to recover objects of great historical and cultural value that they say are in Fernanda’s possession.
The items claimed by the heirs include guitars, acoustic guitars, trophies, gold and platinum records, as well as clothes worn by Erasmus throughout his career. Through a search and seizure process, Leonardo and Gil hope to ensure that these relics not only return to the family, but can also be preserved as part of the singer’s legacy.
According to the lawyers of Erasmus’ children, the widow had appropriated a vast collection of objects belonging to the singer, objects that have inestimable historical value. The collection includes musical instruments, clothing from the Jovem Guarda era and other objects that were part of the journey of one of the biggest names in Brazilian music.
Lawyers argue that by withholding these assets, Fernanda not only prevents his heirs from accessing her father’s estate, but also deprives the public of a part of Brazilian cultural history. “THEBy keeping these objects for herself, the widow takes away from her children, grandchildren and admirers a precious cultural collection that could be exhibited, keeping alive the memory of Erasmo Carlos“, the court petition reads.
A security video, dated September 9, 2024, was included in the lawsuit as evidence. In it, Fernanda appears removing a guitar from the trunk of a stationary vehicle, which belonged to the musician’s company. This video constitutes one of the elements used by the heirs’ defense to support the legal action against the widow.
Erasmo Carlos: Reports and memorabilia exhibited
Another point of conflict between the heirs and Fernanda revolves around the relationships shown after Tremendão’s death. In an article on the program “Fantástico”, Fernanda appeared in an interview in which she showed details of the apartment where she lived with Erasmo. During the course of the report, he showed the singer’s personal items, including a Rolex watch and a necklace, which the children said belonged to their father and should not have been in his possession.
Furthermore, the article showed several historical objects, such as musical instruments, notebooks with notes and lyrics of songs composed by Erasmo Carlos, and even a sewing machine that supposedly belonged to the singer’s grandmother. For Leonardo and Gil these objects have immeasurable value and should be preserved as part of their father’s historical collection.
The dispute worsened due to the separation of property regime that regulated the marriage of Erasmo and Fernanda. According to the trial, this property regime would prevent Fernanda from being entitled to the inheritance or half of the singer’s estate, since it was signed to guarantee the patrimonial separation between the spouses.
The question regarding the fate of these relics promises to be a long one and involves not only family issues, but also the preservation of a fundamental part of Brazilian culture. Erasmo Carlos’ collection, in addition to being a personal heritage, represents a legacy for the music and history of the country, and the artist’s children fight to ensure that this is adequately preserved.
