Singer, songwriter, producer and harmonica player Sarah Meyz has just released the single Hold it downan alternative pop full of dynamics that addresses, from a subjective and emotional point of view, the delicate topic of continuous massacres in schools in the USA.
Format in Music production and engineering AND Vocal performance for the Berklee College of Musicthe artist was in Boston in 2018 when he learned, through the news, of yet another sad episode involving an attacker in a school in Parkland, Florida (USA).
“At first I was just very angry, sad, angry. I didn’t even intend to write anything. But I had it in my head and I needed to get it out somehow. The song came out all at once: melody, lyrics, bridge, chorus, everything”, remembers the composer.
The process that led to the birth of the song was quite long. First of all because it was a song in which Sarah had a lot of expectations. Attention to detail, over the years she has gradually worked on production, as well as other artistic and professional work.
A lot has happened along the way: graduation, the pandemic, the move England work at the famous studio Abbey Road in London.
Sarah Meyz: The unique registration process
Please note Sara Meyz he is part of a new generation that sees the process of recording and producing music not as a mere recording technique, but as part of the creative process of the composition itself. Graduated and active in the sector, she tends to personally produce her own songs in her home studio, taking care of every aspect.
“I really like adding layers, experimenting, exploring. This is a space to be creative and I like to make the most of it”says the producer, who recorded the song between Boston, Bristol, Jundiaí AND London.
When we say that she likes to think about every aspect, from start to finish, it’s because her artistic thinking ranges from music production to music videos. The interesting video that accompanies the single, according to her, began to be conceived while she was composing it. So he called the audiovisual producer Bianca Sousa to co-direct the clip.
In full pandemicand with all precautions, the two went with their equipment and costumes to a school in the city with unique and classical architecture, and immersed themselves in the creative process. Based on the premise of the video and a previous script, they filmed more or less spontaneously, in a single day, since at any moment Sarah would be traveling to London.
The video shows the singer herself as the only character on the scene, wearing schoolgirl clothes and reviving the internal conflict represented in the lyrics: a student who, in the midst of a massacre, thinks of her mother and everything she still wants. to do in life, he is disgusted by the situation, he despairs, but, in the end, he clings to an immense desire to live and the desire that no one else can go through all this. The fact that there is only one person on stage, with the surrounding chaos suggested by the script, inserts the listener/spectator into the situation and into the mind of the character.
Audio and video speak fluently because the music itself has a cinematic, narrative style, which transmits the message much more through images than through speech, despite the direct and objective language. “When I create my music, I want to produce a fiction film, not a documentary”metaphorizes the singer.
