The young woman was about to release her first solo album
The singer Nell Smith passed away last Saturday, 5th, after suffering a car accident, the young woman’s parents confirmed in a post on Instagram. She was just 17 years old. Read statement:

It pains us deeply to say that our energetic, talented, unique and beautiful daughter was cruelly taken from us on Saturday night.
We are shaken by the news and don’t know what to do or say.
She had so much more to experience and offer to this world, but we are grateful that she lived so much in her 17 years. She left an indelible mark on the world and an immeasurable void in our hearts.
Hug your kids even tighter tonight, and for now, let us handle things. We will scream when we need you.

Smith gained notoriety by partnering with Flaming Lipsa band I was a big fan of. They recorded an album of covers of songs by Nick Cave after the singer sent a letter that caught the attention of Wayne Coyne.

We are all shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of our artist and dear friend Nell Smithover the weekend, in British Columbia. Nell was just 17 years old and was preparing for the release of his first solo album in early 2025 on Bella Union, made in Brighton with Jack and Lily Wolterfrom the band Penelope Isles. His first release was an album of covers of songs by Nick Caverecorded with fellow Bella Union artists, The Flaming Lipsin 2021, titled Where The Viaduct Looms.
As we all try to come to terms with this terrible news, and out of respect for the grieving family of Nellwe are unable to comment further at this time.

Coynefrontman of Flaming Lipsalso announced the death of Nell during a show in Portland. With his voice breaking, he stated that the singer died due to a “car accident”: “We are reminded once again of the power of music and how encouraging it can be to be surrounded by people you love.”
