Liam Payne, former One Direction, dies after falling from a hotel in Buenos Aires

The English singer would have fallen from the third floor, in an accident still under investigation by the Argentine authorities

The English singer Liam Payne, former member of the boy band One Direction, died this Wednesday afternoon (16/10) in Buenos Aires, after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur hotel, where he was staying. According to the Argentine newspaper La Nación, Payne fell from a height of approximately 13 metres, which caused his immediate death. Alberto Crescenti, head of Argentina’s Emergency Medical Assistance System, confirmed that the artist died instantly.

Police investigation

La Nación also reported that police were called to the hotel to investigate an incident with an aggressive man, although the relationship between this event and Payne’s death was not confirmed. According to the American website TMZ, witnesses reported that the singer was agitated and had shown erratic behavior in the hotel lobby shortly before the incident, even destroying a laptop. He reportedly had to be taken back to his room.

Payne was in Argentina to attend a show by his former bandmate Niall Horan, who he joined at the event, held on October 2.

Musical trajectory

Born on August 29, 1993 in England, Liam gained fame when he was part of the band formed with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik on the program “The X Factor”. One Direction has released five albums and their debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.

Considered One Direction’s primary songwriter, he released only one album after the group broke up, “LP1” in 2019, but was working on a new album. According to NME magazine, the project was postponed after new single “Teardrops” failed to crack the top 30 most played songs in the UK, only reaching number 43. Furthermore, he terminated his contract with his manager at the beginning of 2024.

The singer was 31 years old and leaves behind a 7-year-old son, the result of his relationship with singer Cheryl Cole, from whom he separated in 2018.
