The rapper kicks off the ‘Chromakopia’ era with a song that explores paranoia, teasing his new album
Rapper Tyler, the Creator teased his new phase this Monday (10/21) with the release of the single “Noid”, accompanied by a music video directed by the artist himself. The video features a special appearance by “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri, who plays a deranged fan.
He appears right at the beginning, approaching Tyler on the street with a cell phone in his hand – which turns into a weapon –, oscillating between maniacal laughter and a menacing posture.
Exploring paranoia
To materialize the feeling of paranoia, the clip uses sepia tones, surreal images and strange masks, which create a disturbing atmosphere, consistent with the song. Tyler sums up the theme in the chorus: “Para-paranoia/ I feel it in my aura/ Living among cameras and tape recorders.” Elsewhere in the song he describes the feeling of feeling constantly threatened: “I think my neighbors want me dead/ I’ve got a cannon under my bed/ Three times I check if I’ve locked the door/ I know every creak in the floor/ Damn, I’m paranoid.”
The melody, in turn, is built around rock guitars, reminiscent of Black Sabbath’s classic “Paranoid”. The track also incorporates a sample from Zambian musician Paul Ngozi.
With the release of “Noid”, Tyler sets the stage for the arrival of his new album, “Chromakopia”, which will be released this Friday (10/28).
