The singer spoke about her career while promoting the release of a new short film inspired by Russia’s war against Ukraine

Kate Bush said she is “very interested” in making a new studio album, and confirmed how “I have a lot of ideas… it’s been a long time.” The statement comes a few years after the iconic artist returned to the spotlight due to the presence of “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” on the soundtrack of the fourth season of Stranger Thingshit series from Netflix.

The 66-year-old music legend made the emotional admission in a rare interview on the show Todayfrom the BBC Radio 4 (via Rolling Stone UK): “I’m really looking forward to getting back into that creative space.” Bush talked to Emma Barnett to announce the launch of Little Shrew (Snowflake)a new short film written and directed by the star inspired by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The four-minute animated clip shows a shrew searching for hope as he travels through a bombed-out city. The clip has a soundtrack by Snowflakea song by 50 Words for Snowalbum by Bush 2011.

It’s worth remembering how the singer hasn’t released any new music since her 2011 album, but she explained the Barnett that the film gave him inspiration for “[voltar] to that creative space.” “I’ve been caught doing a lot of archival work over the last few years at all levels: redesigning our website, putting together a book of lyrics.”

I’m really looking forward to starting work on a new album when it’s finished. I have a lot of ideas and I’m really looking forward to getting back into that creative space, it’s been a long time. Particularly last year, I felt really ready to start doing something new.

“This animation took a lot of time this year, so when it’s finished I’ll be ready to start again,” he continued. As for the new film, kate bush explained that he started working on the project shortly after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

“I think it was a big shock for all of us, it was a long period of peace that we all lived through,” he said. “And I thought I really wanted to do a little animation that featured… originally a little girl, it was really the idea of a child and children caught up in war, I wanted to draw attention to how horrible it is for children. So I had the idea of a small storyboard.”

She then explained the decision to use a shrew to portray the plight of Ukrainians: “I think to some extent we’ve all become really desensitized to the violence that we see in movies all the time, where people are just slaughtered.”

But if a dog was killed in a movie, everyone would be up in arms. It’s a terrible thing to say, but I think there’s an element of truth to it.

Bush added to Barnett that she was not yet ready to return to the stage, with her final performances taking place at a 2014 residency at the Hammersmith Apolloin London.
