Rapper Lil Durk arrested for murder in music dispute

The Grammy-winning artist allegedly plotted an assassination to secure leadership of the Chicago music collective

Rapper Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Devontay Banks, was arrested last Thursday (10/24), near an airport, where he was preparing to leave the United States, according to federal prosecutors. Lil Durk, accused of masterminding the 2022 murder of a rival, was allegedly involved in a leadership dispute within the Chicago music collective Only the Family, according to a criminal complaint filed by authorities.

Winner of the 2024 Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for “All My Life,” the artist appeared in federal court in Florida on Friday (10/25) and is expected to be sent to federal court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks, he said a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, where the charges were filed. Lil Durk’s lawyer could not be contacted to respond to requests for comment made by the American press.

Identification and repression of the criminal association

Previously identified as “Co-conspirator 1” in the Oct. 17 indictment, 32-year-old Lil Durk is charged with conspiracy to commit murder along with five other suspects. According to the complaint, the group’s target was a man identified as tuberculosis, who was deemed a threat by Lil Durk. In an attempted execution in Los Angeles, the suspects opened fire on TB, but ended up killing another person, identified as SR, using an automatic weapon.

The controversy reportedly stemmed from a November 2020 confrontation at an Atlanta nightclub, where a tuberculosis acquaintance shot and killed a man, prompting retaliation from Lil Durk, as reported in the complaint.

The prosecution alleges that rivalry within the Only the Family collective, intensified by previous conflicts, motivated the series of acts of violence.
