Faced with ironic and disinterested responses, the presenter invited the player, who was in the next studio, to leave the band in the background; we remember the edition of ‘Programa Livre’
THE Crushing pumpkins will perform this Sunday, the 3rd, in Sao Paulo (during this visit to Brazil, they also performed another show in Brasilia, the 1st). When they were still at their peak, in 1998, they had an unusual participation in the Free programfrom Serginho Groismannon SBT, which also involved the player Ronaldo (the ‘Phenomenon’).
The presenter opened the program by celebrating “welcoming one of the biggest bands in the world”, who opened by playing Perfect. When the questions were opened to the public, however, a tone of mockery and irony emerged, especially from the singer. Billy Corgan, then they were joined by Jams Iha and D’arcy Wretzky.
The Smashing Pumpkins’ debauched responses
“Do you compose your own songs or do you have someone who writes them for you?” asked one young man. “Michael Jackson writes all our songs. But when he’s busy, he’s a songwriting monkey,” Corgan responded. “What are your favorite bands?” said another. “I like the guy who does that song, ‘Olé, Olé!’ [La Copa de La Vida, de Ricky Martin]”
Faced with numerous dry, confused or ironic responses from the Smashing Pumpkins, a young man ventured: “I wanted to ask what their influences are both in music and in other arts, such as literature, painting…”.
“I want to meet Ronaldinho”
The singer mocked him again: “[Risos] Hm… Well… Romário influenced many of our songs. Now it’s Ronaldo’s turn.” Serginho Groisman then took the initiative and the following dialogue emerged:
“What do you know about Ronaldo?”
“I know that Ronaldo has pain in his knee, so he can’t score the goal”
“Oh yes? Do you want to meet Ronaldo?”
“Yes, certainly. Is he here? [Risos]”
“Do you want to meet? Really.”
“YES”.
“Okay, just a minute.”
[Corgan dá risada]
The round of questions continued and, after a short and disinterested answer from D’arcy, Groisman took the initiative: “Okay! I want to introduce you to the best footballer in the world: Ronaldinho!”. Faced with the musicians’ disbelief, he added: “It’s true!”
All the spotlight is on Ronaldo
Smiling, Ronaldo Fenômeno entered the studio to the delight of Serginho and the audience, as excited as he had not been during the recording. “Good afternoon!” said, who played two seasons as the best player in the world, but was injured at 22.
“I received a CD as a gift! But I don’t speak English, man!”, commented Ronaldo without fully understanding what was happening. Groisman commented, “I just wanted to let you know that we have great admiration and adoration for you. You know that.”
The ‘lightning’ presence after the call was explained: “Today I came to do another program, to record the Joe [Soares Onze e Meia]. I wanted to come here to hug you and enjoy this wonderful audience.” With the orchestra in the background, the audience began to sing: “Ronaldinho, I love you!”
“Good luck! Strength and energy so that everything goes well in your life,” continued Groisman, releasing the player, who also asked for autographs on the record. The host approached Corgan, who appeared embarrassed, and joked: “Who else do you want to meet? Who else? Madonna?”
He also tried to briefly explain the situation to the Juggernaut: “I asked, ‘Who would you like to meet?’ He said ‘Ronaldinho’, jokingly, then you appeared here.” The player said goodbye and left to an ovation.
