The arrest of the hotel employee and the singer’s friend comes nearly a month after the former One Direction member’s death in Buenos Aires
The investigations focus on drug supply
Almost a month after the death of former One Direction member Liam Payne, Argentine police have arrested three people suspected of involvement in the death of the singer, who jumped from the third-floor balcony of a Buenos Aires hotel. Among those arrested are two hotel employees, accused of “supplying drugs” to the singer, as reported by ABC News. The third inmate is a friend of Payne, who, according to police, was negligent in not alerting his family to the musician’s worsening health, despite being aware of the relapse he was facing.
The singer’s friend was accused of abandonment
According to authorities, Payne’s friend was listed as an emergency contact in Argentina, but did not respond to communication attempts made by the hotel and police following the singer’s death. Police contacted the friend using a number provided by the front desk, but he did not return calls, which contributed to the “abandonment” charge. The negligence, according to the sources, would have hindered the possibility of a timely intervention.
Toxicology tests reveal illicit substances
Toxicological tests carried out on Payne’s body indicated the presence of a mixture of substances commonly called “pink cocaine”, which, despite the name, does not contain cocaine in its composition. According to the UK Addiction Treatment Centre, this drug is a combination of MDMA, ketamine and 2C-B and is popular for its vibrant pink colour. The drug can be consumed in both powder and tablet form and has gained prominence in Latin America due to its visual appeal.
In addition to “pink cocaine”, “crystals” were detected in Payne’s blood, indicating consumption of the Argentine version of methamphetamine, a highly stimulant drug with a prolonged effect, according to analyzes by local authorities.
