Singer admits to having used cocaine in large quantities at the beginning of her career, but appears to have switched to other substances throughout her life
Drug use is common in the entertainment industry and Lady Gaga he did not escape this, especially at the beginning of his career. Over the years, the singer has explained how substance addiction has disrupted her life. The last time she brought up the subject, the artist had not yet fully recovered from the problem, although she had improved a lot.
In a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair (via Showbiz CheatSheet), Gaga She recalled her early career, when she left her parents’ house to live alone in a small apartment in New York. Mother Monster described a little about her home at the time, approximately between 2004 and 2007:
I moved to Stanton Street downtown and lived there for three years. In a tiny 37 square meter apartment – just me and my keyboard, with the kitchen in the living room and the record player next to the toaster. I had my keyboard, my bed and a dream. I had jobs, paid my own rent, and made music on my own. It was an inspiring time at first – leaving my parents’ house and forcing myself to survive on my own.”
However, it was at this time that Gaga started using cocaine. She talked about the time she was under the influence of drugs during a meeting for a possible record deal — which, obviously, ended up not working out.
I was lying in bed on my stomach… this is so crazy, but I was eating a salad, and I got a call: ‘Can you be at this restaurant in 30 minutes? This executive from a major record company wants to meet you.’ And the salad was really unhealthy, it had fried chicken or something. So I said, ‘I’ll be there.’ I got up, went to the bathroom, threw up the salad, snorted a line of cocaine and went to the meeting. I was completely crazy and had been through so much.”
Although she was sincere, the artist asked that the speech be published with a reminder: such attitudes are not recommended. She said:
If you post this, (make it clear that) I don’t want my fans to imitate that or be like that. I don’t want my fans to think they have to be like this to be great. That’s the past. It was a low point and led to chaos.”
In 2009, Lady Gaga told the The Observer (via BBC) who stopped using cocaine after a conversation with his father. The artist reinforced that she does not encourage and does not want her fans to go through the same problems. However, statements on other occasions show that Gaga still struggles with his demons.

Controlled addiction?
Despite having stated that he stopped using cocaine, in the same interview LadyGaga admitted that he comes into contact with the substance “occasionally”.
I’m not going to lie, it’s occasional. And when I say ‘occasional’, I mean maybe a couple of times a year. I don’t really use (cocaine) anymore. I haven’t used it in, oh, probably six months.”
In 2013, the artist admitted to also using large amounts of marijuana and said that she considered herself addicted to the drug, but also stopped. In a radio interview Z100 (via The State Journal-Register), stated:
I’ve been addicted to it… I was smoking up to 15, 20 marijuana cigarettes a day, without tobacco. I was totally living on another psychedelic plane, completely doping myself… I had to stop.”
Still in 2013, Gaga said that when he got injured and had to cancel many tour dates, “Born This Way Ball”he fell into despair and started taking more drugs. Consumption was reduced as she recovered.
In 2017, speaking to UK Times Online (via US Magazine), she once again denied using cocaine. However, he admitted to using ecstasy, albeit in small quantities.
My schedule doesn’t give me much time to eat. But I certainly don’t have eating problems. A little MDMA (ecstasy) every now and then has never killed anyone, but I don’t really do drugs. I don’t touch cocaine anymore.”
In this same interview, Gaga he also revealed that he smokes cigarettes and drinks whiskey during creative processes, but not in a problematic way. The only drug that the artist says she really fears is heroin, due to its destructive power and high capacity to be addictive.
