The pioneer bepop drummer, author of the soundtrack to the cartoon “Soul”, has died after a short illness

Bebop pioneer

Roy Haynes, famed drummer and one of jazz’s greatest figures, died on Tuesday (12/11) at the age of 99 after a short illness, according to his family. The family did not reveal details about the illness.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Haynes was one of the pioneers of bepop, a style that would transform jazz with its rhythmic and harmonic complexity. During this period, he played alongside giants of the genre, contributing his unique and innovative style. From 1947 to 1949 he worked with saxophonist Lester Young and from 1949 to 1952 he was a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker’s quintet. At the time he also recorded with pianist Bud Powell and saxophonists Wardell Gray and Stan Getz.

Career marked by great collaborations

In the decades that followed, Haynes continued to expand his repertoire and collaborate with figures from other aspects of jazz. He was the partner of singer Sarah Vaughan, with whom he worked for several years. Together they released popular albums, including “In the Land of Hi-Fi” (1955), “Swingin’ Easy” (1957) and “After Hours at the London House” (1959).

Between the 80s and 90s he worked with fusion musicians such as pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny, demonstrating his versatility and ability to adapt to the different styles that emerged over the years.

As a lead artist, he has released approximately 30 studio and live albums. Among his most notable works are “Out of the Afternoon” (1962), “Cracklin'” (1963) and “Hip Ensemble” (1971).

His latest album, “Roy-Alty” (2011), was recorded with the band Fountain of Youth, made up of younger musicians, reaffirming his role as a mentor to new generations.

Multimedia artist

Haynes also connected to the current gaming universe by expressing himself as a radio host in the game “GTA V” (2008). And he also participated in the recordings of the original soundtrack of “Soul” (2020), a Pixar animation about a jazz musician.

Recognition and legacy

Over the course of his career, Haynes has received three Grammys: two awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance (in 1989 and 2000) and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” honoring his contributions to music.

Roy Haynes leaves behind three children – including a drummer and a clarinetist -, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who continue his musical legacy.
