Vocalist says he has become a “very passive” person within the band when it comes to offering creative contributions

The rupture of system of a Down in 2006 it still arouses curiosity among the public. Even with the reunion in 2010, it can be said that the band was never the same again: the classic formation was maintained, however, the return did not generate a new album, only the charity singles “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz” in 2020.

One of the keys to understanding relationship strain is Serj Tankian. The vocalist began to have creative differences with the guitarist Daron Malakianespecially during the album recording process Mezmerize and Hypnotizeboth from 2005. Now, the singer reveals that he “emotionally disconnected” from the group precisely during this period.

In an interview with Metal Hammer, Tankian initially says:

“I’ve had a very unique relationship with the last few records (Mezmerize and Hypnotize) because I had, to some extent, emotionally disconnected from the band while making them.”

Next, Serj explains that the creative dispute in the band turned him into someone “very passive”. He explains:

“There were songs I wanted to bring and felt like I couldn’t. I was in a strange place. I contributed creatively, but no… I don’t know. I needed to breathe. I felt like there was a lot going on.”

Records appreciated, despite the regrets

This does not mean, however, that Serj Tankian doesn’t like Mezmerize and Hypnotize. The albums responsible for bringing songs like “BYOB”, “Question!” and “Lonely Day” are appreciated by the singer, even if with personal reservations.

“I still think those songs are great. But when I think about it, I also remember that it was a strange time in my life — and that’s something I have to be aware of as well.”

In other interviews, Tankian made it clear that from the beginning he knew how the system of a Down would have problems. On WSOU 89.5 FM radio (via Igor Miranda website), for example, he commented that the creative self-sufficiency of Daron Malakianwho grew up as an author of his own songs, could lead to a breakup.

The guitarist’s dedication could also be an obstacle, oddly enough. The frontman explains:

“Although John (Dolmayan) has been playing drums since he was eight years old, he has done many things in his life, such as owning a comic book company. shavo (Odadjianbassist) did other things too, although music was a big part of his life. But for Daronwas the only activity. I also did a lot of things in life. I worked in different industries, graduated from college, and got into music later than all the other guys.”

System of a Down currently

The fact is that the activities of the system of a Down have been increasingly reduced in recent years. Few shows are being held and, when they do occur, they are sporadic, at festivals or large events, with no connection to tours. About that, Serj Tankian works on a solo career, having released the EP Foundations in September and a new autobiography, Down with the Systemavailable in Brazil from Buzz Editora.

What does Serj Tankian think of System of a Down continuing with another singer?
