L’Orville: new horizons produces some of the show’s best episodes and features serious emotional arcs and storylines for the characters. “A Tale Of Two Topas” may be the most exciting of all, as it revisits Bortus and Klyden’s son Topa, who has questions about himself but doesn’t know why. The episode is the latest sequel to Season 1’s “About A Girl” and, according to actor J. Lee, features a performance by one of his co-stars that deserves a lot of credit.
The Season 3 follow-up episode shows Topa encountering a lot of questions and confusion. many inside orville The team knows the reason behind it, but does not want to directly disclose that Topa’s sex changed at birth due to Moclan customs that prioritize a male-dominated species. Topa eventually learns the truth through a hidden file and decides to become a woman again with the help of the ship’s robot, Isaac. This decision infuriates Klyden, who unsuccessfully tries to convince Topa that gender reassignment was ultimately much better than the cultural stigma associated with being a Moclan woman.
At the end of the episode, Klyden leaves. orvillebut not before ending her marriage to Bortus and telling Topa she wished she had never been born. John LaMarr J. Lee actor was very supportive of the story when he spoke to Gossipify and praised actor Chad Coleman’s performance:
I think it’s great to follow Topa’s story from season one. What Peter Macon and Chad Coleman can do with Bortus and Klyden: I have to give Chad some love right now because he’s a tough character to play. It’s hard to play a character that everyone apparently hates. But, if you look at it from Klyden’s point of view, he’s been mistreated. He has passed the ringtone and speaks only of his experience of him. You know they have this quote, ‘Hurting people, hurting people.’ I think what they were able to do with it was amazing.
The story of Topa inside orville it’s incredibly heavy so far and Chad Coleman’s Klyden is an integral part of the story. His actions at the end of “A Tale Of Two Topas” are disturbing, but fans and those who follow his Hulu subscription know his story with the problem. The fact that Klyden knew he was born a girl was a major trauma in his life and, as such, he hoped to keep Topa from feeling that way. Meanwhile, Bortus feared that if Topa didn’t know the truth, her son would never be truly happy.
Stories like “A Tale Of Two Topas” show the effects of Seth MacFarlane’s decision to make L’Orville: new horizons further in a serious direction and makes the show continue to tell more serious stories in season 4 (which is not guaranteed). It’s also an opportunity for the series to work on more John LaMarr-centric adventures, which the actor confirmed to Gossipify that he wouldn’t mind seeing more. We hope to see a lot more of him in another season, and maybe even Chad Coleman’s Klyden.
L’Orville: new horizons releasing new episodes on Hulu (opens in a new tab) Thursday. If we’re lucky, we’ll soon be notified of a renewal and fans will be able to enjoy the second half of the season without the weight of uncertainty about the show’s future.
