The singer contracted an eye infection in July 2024 which worsened over the months
Singer Elton John revealed Sunday (1/12) that he is having trouble watching his new musical, “The Devil Wears Prada,” due to the loss of his right vision after contracting an eye infection. The information was given during the opening night of the show, at the Dominion Theatre, in London.
“I lost my sight and couldn’t see the presentation [do musical]but I enjoyed listening to it,” said John, who was assisted off stage by David Furnish.”[Agradeço] to my husband who supported me because I couldn’t go to many previews. It’s hard for me to watch, but I love listening [a trilha sonora] and it sounded good tonight.”
Despite the limitations, the artist attended the premiere of the musical, which donated funds to his charity, the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The nonprofit organization aims to support HIV prevention, as well as expand educational programs and treatment services for people living with the virus.
Elton John wrote the score for “The Devil Wears Prada,” a musical based on the 2006 film of the same name about a young journalist navigating the glamor of an international fashion magazine. The production stars Vanessa Williams (“Ugly Beth”) as the fearsome editor Miranda Priestly.
Eye problems
In September, Elton John revealed that he had contracted an infection in the south of France in July that left him “with limited vision in his right eye”. The artist explained that the situation has worsened over the months and that his plans for a new album have been completely put on hold.
John also said the vision in his left eye was “not the best”, but explained that he was slowly recovering from the illness. Despite this, the singer acknowledged that it will be “an extremely slow process and it will take some time for vision to return to the affected eye.” He will have to wait a little longer to return to the recording studios.
