The main hit of Mariah Carey’s career, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ brings in thousands of dollars annually to those involved
With the arrival of December 2024, the song “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” the pop diva’s main hit Mariah Careyis once again highlighted on streaming platforms and public executions. Successful around the world, the song was composed by a Brazilian: Walter Afanasieff.
Brazilian pianist, music producer and composer, Afanasieff was born in São Paulo, on February 10, 1958. The Brazilian’s parents came from Russia and lived in Brazil until 1962, when the artist was six years old and had just had his first contact with the piano, and moved to city of San Francisco, in the United States.
In the USA, walter began his career in music playing keyboards for the French violinist Jean-Luc Pontyartist of jazz fusion. The success began thanks to contact with Narada Michael Waldenresponsible for introducing it into the industry.
From 1988 and 1998, Afanasieff helped transform the then-starter Mariah Carey in one of the main artists in the world. He collaborated on hits like “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” “Hero,” “One Sweet Day” and “Dreamlover.”
According to information from the magazine The Economist“All I Want For Christmas Is You” accumulated US$60 million, around R$361.6 million at current prices, in royalties until 2017. During interview to UOL in 2018, Walter Afanasieff recalled that when he met Careyhad no idea she would become a global pop star.
I only realized when I started composing and understanding her musical heart, that there was a musical soul there. It was something exceptional.
Furthermore, during the production of “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” the Brazilian thought the song would be just another Christmas song: “We didn’t imagine anything that ended up happening. We said: ‘Ah, what a cute song’. It was just another partnership.”
“The music was old-fashioned rock and roll, and the Mariah I was singing more sophisticated pop songs, which were huge hits,” he continued. “Compared to others,’All I Want For Christmas Is You‘ is very different, but there is something about it that is charming, fun and perfect for the holiday season. That’s why it lasted so long.”
