Band performed at Rock in Rio in 2022 and returns to Brazil as one of the headliners of the São Paulo festival, scheduled for September
Two of the five headliners The Town 2025a festival that reaches its second edition in São Paulo, have already been announced. Still in November, the organization confirmed Katy Perry for the third day of the event, September 12th. On the second date, September 7th, it will be the Green Day.
The American band composed of Billie Joe Armstrong (voice and guitar), Mike Dirnt (low) and Tre Cool (drums) comes to the country for the fifth time, after visits in 1998, 2010, 2017 and 2022 — a low number considering that the group has existed for 35 years and exploded 30 years ago. On the most recent occasion, they played at Rock in Riofestival run by the same people responsible for The Town.
It’s still not possible to say which show Green Day will bring to Brazil. In 2024, they toured with a tour that celebrated 30 years of Dookie (1994) and the 20 American Idiot (2004), his most famous albums. Both were played in full, meaning that the new album, Saviors (2024), only had one or two tracks in the setlist. However, these works will no longer celebrate their anniversary in 2025 — therefore, it is expected that they will resume a more conventional set, like the one seen at Rock in Rio by the reporter who writes to you.

In the capital of Rio de Janeiro, as usual, the trio performed with the support of Jason White (guitar), Kevin Preston (guitar) and Jason Freese (keyboards and saxophone). They held the best rock show of the 2022 edition and one of the best since the event took place regularly again in Rio, starting in 2011.
Even though it is a group with a punk essence, Green Day promotes a well-paced show, with art on big screens, pyrotechnics, fireworks and (little) use of pre-recorded bases to “fill” the sound. No songs from the most recent album at the time, the criticized Father of All… (2020), entered the script — which is sometimes left aside, whether due to direct interaction with fans who came on stage, or through improvisations and changes to songs that make sense in one show, but perhaps not in another. It’s all very well rehearsed, but with a hint of informality.
The public is usually prepared by two undisputed classics that are played in the PAs before the band even takes the stage: “Bohemian Rhapsody”from queen (always sung in unison by those present), and “Blitzkrieg Bop”of the Ramones. There are also occasions where they use “I Love Rock and Roll”in the version of Joan Jett and the Blackheartsand “We Will Rock You”from queen. When the musicians take the stage, the audience is already in the palm of their hands.

Even though the other members are not far behind, it is impossible not to highlight Billie Joe Armstrong. In addition to having kept his voice intact at the age of 52, the frontman leads the audience in a typically arena rock way. When he performed at Rock in Rio, the party commander:
- He asked a fan to sing with him the final part of “Know Your Enemy”;
- led in “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” a marriage proposal from fans who met in an Orkut community dedicated to Green Day admirers;
- held out the Brazilian flag with the words “no to racism, no to fascism, no to sexism” during the cover “Knowledge” (Operation Ivy);
- He held out the LGBTQ+ flag, lay on the stage face down and face up, gave a kiss towards the camera and made the band reduce the volume and then increase it, all in double “King for a Day” and “Shout” (The Isley Brothers).
As far as the repertoire is concerned, it is worth waiting for vigorous sounds like “American Idiot”, “Holiday”, “Welcome to Paradise” (which in 2022 mobilized a gigantic wheel), “St. Jimmy” and “Minority”in addition to the slower “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, “21 Guns”of the curiously progressive “Jesus of Suburbia” and climate “Longview”. This is just to stay on the surface. Out with the slowness “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”performed only by Armstrong on stage to conclude the set. An almost anticlimactic ending to a show with absurd levels of energy.
With the right to even a marriage proposal, Green Day is putting on the best show at Rock in Rio 2022 so far. The whole band is sharp and impresses like Billie Joe Armstrong is a great frontman. pic.twitter.com/nRUbws0dhX
