Nicko McBrain announces farewell to Iron Maiden at the Sao Paulo show

The last show with the group will take place this Saturday at Allianz Parque, marking the end of an era in the drummer’s career

Reason for departure

Drummer Nicko McBrain, who has been part of Iron Maiden since 1982, announced his departure from the band with this Saturday’s (12/7) show in Sao Paulo. In a statement published on social media, the drummer explained that the decision was made after much reflection.

“After much consideration, it is with sadness and joy that I decide to abandon extensive touring. Today, Saturday, December 7, in Sao Paulo, will be my last show with Iron Maiden. I wish the band much success in the future,” he wrote.

The future with Iron Maiden

Although he will leave the stage with the band, McBrain said he will continue to be involved with Iron Maiden on future projects, as well as pursuing personal ventures.

“What can I say? Touring with Iron Maiden for the last 42 years has been an incredible journey!” said the drummer, who also thanked his fans, wife Rebecca and children for their support. “You made the dream come true and I love you,” she added.

Overcoming after a stroke

In 2023, McBrain revealed that he had suffered a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), which had a significant impact on his health. “I was paralyzed with the right side of my shoulder down,” he reported at the time.

The musician said that despite a partial recovery of around 70%, the episode made him reconsider his priorities. “I was very worried that my career was over, but with the love and support of my wife Rebecca and my Maiden family, I was able to recover,” he said.

The announcement marks the end of an era for Iron Maiden, the British band that McBrain helped cement as one of the biggest names in heavy metal worldwide.
