The singer initially had Elton John as an idol, but she also fell in love with another artist’s work when she heard a song on the radio once.
One of my greatest musical passions kate bush was David Bowie. The voice of “Running Up That Hill” and “Wuthering Heights” At a young age, he discovered the work of Chameleon — although I had already Elton John another idol at the time — and had the opportunity to watch his historic show.
Bush wrote the preface for an edition of the magazine Mojo (via Classic Rock), in 2007, fully dedicated to Bowie. Initially, the singer narrated how she first came into contact with the late artist’s work in 2016 — and what impression the song made on her.
In the artist’s words:
I was in my bathtub, submerged in bubbles, listening to Radio Luxembourg, when I heard David Bowie for the first time. ‘There’s a starman waiting in the sky…’ and I thought that was such an interesting song, and he had a really unusual voice. Soon I started listening to that song (‘Starman’) everywhere and the music of Bowie It became part of my life.”
The interest in David and its appearance, described by Kate as “beautiful”, it made the singer stand out among the then young artist’s main idols. She states:
Your photo was on the wall of my room, close to the sacred space reserved only for my greatest love – Elton John. A fantastic composer with an incomparable voice, Bowie it had everything. He had just the right amount of weirdness, was obviously intelligent and, of course, very sexy.”

kate bush had an opportunity that many fans of David Bowie they would like to have lived. The singer was at the artist’s last show in which he performed as the character Ziggy Stardustin 1973, during the tour promoting the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972).

She recalled:
Ziggy played guitar. And I was there to see your last show as Ziggy Stardust with the The Spiders From Mars. The atmosphere was so charged that at the end, when he cried, we all cried with him.”

Some time later, Kate met the Chameleon in person. The singer also recalled the occasion — and how she was recognized by her idol:
Working at Abbey Road Studios a few years later, I popped in to see a friend at another session… until I got stuck. Standing there, elegantly behind the soundboard, was David Bowie. He had a light overhead and was smoking a cigarette. He said, ‘Hello, Kate.’ I froze in my seat and said, ‘er… hello’. I left the room, held my breath outside and didn’t have the courage to go back. We’ve met many times since then and I don’t need to leave the room anymore… or do I?”
In 2016, when Bowie passed away, Bush spoke to The Guardian about the impact of the loss. The artist described him with the precision of someone who knew him well:
I am impacted by how the entire country has been thrown into grief and shock. Shock, because someone who had already transcended into immortality could actually die. He was ours. Wonderfully eccentric, in a way only an Englishman could be. Whatever journey his beautiful soul is on right now, I hope in some way he can feel how much we all miss him.”
David Bowie’s death
David Bowie He left us on January 10, 2016, at the age of 69. The singer discreetly battled lung cancer for a year and a half, while preparing his farewell work, which became the album Blackstar (2016), released just a few days before leaving.
