You can’t even joke about bringing a CPF to Bruce Dickinson because maybe he already has it. The vocalist of Iron Maiden comes to Brazil so much that it is at the stage where it is necessary to obtain a Single Ticket and National Health Card (CNS) from the Unified Health System (SUS).

Only since the resumption of post-pandemic travel has Dickinson been in the country for public engagements in seven different occasions. Or six, depending on the reference, since two situations occurred on very close dates. And you already know when it will be back: in September, as an attraction for The Town 2025.

In addition to shows with Maiden and his solo career, the multifaceted singer — who is also an airline pilot with experience in commercial flights, writer, graduate historian, fencer who has competed internationally, radio host, TV presenter and brewmaster — came to perform lectures on different themes.

Postponed, not canceled

The first visit took place for an appointment that had been scheduled for a long time, but had to be postponed precisely due to Covid-19. Iron Maiden was one of the attractions at Rock in Rio 2021, which ended up being transferred to 2022. With their tour Legacy of the Beastthe English band also played in Curitiba, Ribeirão Preto and São Paulo, between August and September 2022.

About the presentation at Rock in Rio, the Igor Miranda website highlighted at the time:

“Iron Maiden has been criticized for some setlist choices for a long time. The band seems to prioritize songs that work better as a sextet, which gives more space for some more progressive songs. But most of the classics are there. […] Musically, it continues to border on perfection. The guitar trio is unbeatable: even Janick Gerssometimes criticized for his ‘acrobatics’ and improvised solos, did a lot. Nicko McBrain He is a force of nature and the true ruler of the group. The bass of Steve Harris not only does it offer support, it also has its moments of brilliance. And Bruce Dickinson, the most commented on throughout the text, continues to defy his age.”

Lectures and tribute

In November of the same year, Bruce participated in the Rio Innovation Weekan event focused on market innovations that also featured the filmmaker Spike Leethe businesswoman and influencer Bianca Andrade (Pink Mouth), between others. On that occasion, as pointed out by journalist Pedro Hollanda for the Igor Miranda websitethe artist spoke for 30 minutes about the need for the business world to understand the importance of people.

“Dickinson highlighted the importance of combating climate change while blasting fake solutions given by technology giants — such as the metaverse and cryptocurrencies, which he categorized as ‘immoral’. Overall, he gave a traditional talk for a business event, albeit colored by the charisma of one of the greatest vocalists in the history of metal. He managed to make the audience laugh amid jokes about the size of Brazilian mosquitoes and stories about his throat cancer diagnosis in 2015.”

In April 2023, two different commitments, but close in date to the point that it is not known whether he flew home and then returned or if he stayed here. Between the 15th and 25th, he performed four shows in Brazil (São Paulo, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre) with a project that pays homage toJon Lordlate keyboardist from Deep Purplewith the performance of the orchestrated album Concert for Group and Orchestra (1969). On the 29th, he spoke for an hour to the festival audience Summer Breeze Brazilat the Memorial da América Latina, in the capital of São Paulo. According to journalist André Luiz Fernandes, in a text for Igor Miranda websitethe chat this time had a more informal character.

“Taking as a basis the autobiography What is this button for?Dickinson brought back memories of his childhood in Sheffield, talked about his beginnings in music (as a drummer, but only owning a bongo drum) and only then came to the big projects, such as the airline he currently commands, the investment in the largest aircraft in the world and , of course, Iron Maiden beers.”

The Mandrake Project

Once again in November, only in 2023, Bruce Dickinson returned as one of the main attractions of CCXPa geek culture event that has nothing to do with heavy metal. In his “skin” as a speaker, the vocalist presented here the first details of what would become The Mandrake Project (2024), his then new solo album, available alongside a graphic novel — which, yes, is related to CCXP.

At that point, he had already announced seven shows in Brazil for April and May 2024. And such presentations actually took place, in Curitiba (when he visited the factory of Bodebrownwhich produces Iron Maiden’s beers in Brazil, and also received the title of honorary citizen of Curitiba), Porto Alegre, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Ribeirão Preto and São Paulo. In a review excerpt for the Igor Miranda websitejournalist Guilherme Gonçalves made the following observation when following the presentation in the federal capital:

“Energetic, provocative and willing to take the entourage of Iron Maiden fans out of their comfort zone. This was the keynote of Bruce Dickinson who, in addition to the already renowned impeccable vocal performance, delivered an excellent show. […] This time, with the spotlight pointed not at Maiden, but at songs that, even though they hadn’t been seen for decades, have aged very well and deserved this rescue.”

Emotional shows with Iron Maiden

On the 6th and 7th of December, Iron Maiden performed, in Brazil, the last two shows of the tour The Future Past. Both took place at Allianz Parque, in São Paulo. Such occasions also marked the farewell of drummer Nicko McBrain, who, after 42 years in the band, will retire from the stage. simon dawson (British Lion, TheOutfield etc) occupies the position.

Regarding the first performance — which took place when the public did not yet know that McBrain would leave the group —, the Igor Miranda website reflects:

“Time proves to be a sensitive issue for an Iron Maiden who concluded their show making promises of a return ‘in two years’ and a Nicko McBrain applauded for managing to perform so well after overcoming health problems. Like him, Bruce Dickinson also overcame a serious illness. Our heavy metal icons are no longer boys and they know it. […] So far, however, there are no signs that Maiden will hang up their boots. It was noticed in this show, the penultimate of the very special tour The Future Past, that there is so much physical vigor — despite the hardships — and artistic to the point that the sextet makes any fan think: these guys have time on their side.”
