Why solo artists have outperformed bands, according to Olivia Rodrigo’s producer

Dan Nigro had his own rock band before working with the singer; Diagnosis aside, he believes in the return of music made collectively

Before becoming famous as a producer and/or composer of works by Olivia Rodrigo, Chappel Roan AND Kylie Minogueamong others, Dan Nigro he was a member of a band called As tall as lions. Active between 2001 and 2010, the group blends elements of emo and indie rock.

The popularity achieved with this project has not even come close to the current one and, at this moment, his work is practically all behind the scenes. It’s a reflection of a point he made in a recent interview.

THE Rolling Stone USANigro pointed out that the current moment is much more favorable to solo artists than bands. According to him, there is a reason linked to our very reality as members of a society that never stops evolving technologically.

“Because we have computers now, it’s harder for bands to form bands. When I was 16 or 17, the only way to make music was to get together with a drummer and a bass player. Kids today might say, ‘Oh, I want to make a song and I want it to sound good, I don’t need other people to do it.”

So, by your assessment, people are “less likely in general to get together to make music”. It is not needed. Therefore fewer groups arise.

This does not mean that the gangs will disappear from the map. Dan Nigro still believes there will be a return of the format in terms of the mainstream.

“I think there is a world where bands will have chart success. I can’t name a specific band right now, but I feel like the way things are going, there will come a time when the world will be ready for it.”

Olivia Rodrigo, Dan Nigro and the power of bands

Also according to Dan Nigro, a song composed by a band tends to have a different energy. Interestingly, his work with Olivia Rodrigo showed him this.

“In songs “All American bitch” AND “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” [do álbum Guts, 2023]She [Olivia] he loved the vibe of his live band and the way they played the songs when he toured – how raw they were. She was really great at showing me, because we have these imaginary rules of “that’s not how music is made nowadays.” He said, “I want this song to feel really raw, played live, with floating tempos.” And I said, ‘OK, I know exactly how to do it’.”

On the other hand, it is also possible, although more complex, to emulate the sound of a band with music created mainly on the computer. Nigro exemplifies with success “Good 4 U”from the previous album, Acid (2021). Aside from Olivia Rodrigo’s vocals, only the drum hi-hat was recorded in the “real world”.
