English vocalist married a Brazilian in 2017 and has since taken up residence in the country, even having an official document

Oli Sykes was born in Ashford, England, but has lived in Brazil for a few years. The vocalist of Bring Me the Horizon He has been married since 2017 to the Brazilian model Alissa Salis and although he spends much of his time on the road, he has revealed that practically the entire covid-19 pandemic has remained in the country.

Over the years, publications indicated that he lived in cities in the state of São Paulo: Taubaté, a city in the interior 130 km from the capital, and Ubatuba, on the coast and 223 km from the megalopolis. In 2023, he even showed on the networks the arrival of his national document: the National Migration Registration Card (RNM), aimed at foreigners who have taken up residence here.

Has Oli enjoyed living in Brazil? Apparently, yes: in an interview with 89 FM Rock Radio (via Blabbermouth), the singer even shared what he appreciates most about our country. Initially, he stated:

“The weather, the people, the food. The way of life is very different to England, but it’s very good for me.”

The Brazilian way of life, in his opinion, is a little “slower”. This is something beneficial for the singer, who needed to get out of the faster pace of England.

“I think mentally I needed to slow down a bit, and it’s very difficult to do that in England, whereas when you come here everything is a bit slower. People are much calmer. I’ve wanted to run away for a long time. I feel like I need to have moments of disconnection and step away from who I am in the band and everything.”

Sykes also highlighted having remained in Brazil during the pandemic. From the tone of his speech, however, it didn’t seem like it was planned.

“I never thought it would be in Brazil, but we were kind of stuck here in lockdown and I ended up realizing how at peace I feel when I’m here. I just really like it.”

Oli Sykes and drug relapse during the pandemic

Despite the positive balance, the pandemic period was not easy for Oli Sykes. In addition to the direct impact of Covid-19, the period brought a mental health crisis in several countries. Faced with this situation, people did not seek help and chose to self-medicate. This was the case for the singer, who suffered a drug relapse.

In an interview with Loudwirehe explained:

“I started using drugs again during the pandemic. I think it was simply because I was used to being worn out. When the pandemic hit and I didn’t have so much to do, I got so bored because I wasn’t used to being a real person that I relapsed.”

Sykes rerevealed that the fear of Bring Me the Horizon losing all the momentum acquired before the pandemic put it in a fragile mental state. Until then, their work ethic dictated a frantic pace, as any interruption could be fatal for the band.

“I used to think my success was based on the mentality: ‘If we stop for a minute, our band will fall apart, no one will like us, we won’t be big anymore. We always have to make new songs, we need to motivate ourselves, we need to do this and that, we don’t have an album’.”

It was four years between Post Human: Survival Horror (2020) and Post Human: Nex Gen (2024), the two most recent releases from Bring Me the Horizon. During this period, Oli Sykes needed to restructure his mental process — and naturally the typically anxious ideas were put aside.
