Different reasons gave a special character to each presentation mentioned in the article, ranging from pop to heavy metal

It’s not a matter of opinion or personal taste: Brazil hosted a series of historic shows by international artists throughout 2024. Such unique events were promoted here for different reasons, whether because of the public’s passion or simply to take advantage of an opportunity.

The country, in fact, has a tradition of serving as a venue for performances that enter the popular imagination. The performance that brought together the largest audience ever took place in Rio de Janeiro: Rod Stewart on Copacabana beach, on New Year’s Eve 1994, with more than 3.5 million gifts. In the category of events with paid admission, for almost a decade the record was Paul McCartney at the Maracanã stadium in 1990, with 184 thousand fans.

The following list brings together five presentations that objectively fit into the “historical show” category, with explanations regarding each of them. Check it out!

Around 1.6 million people (according to Riotur), from various regions of the country and even the world, gathered at the Copacabana beachon May 4, to celebrate. It was no coincidence the name of the tour taken by Madonna to Rio de Janeiro: the Celebration Tour aimed to review the main highlights of the artist’s catalog in honor of 40 years of a successful career.

The historic show, due to a series of factors — audience number, free entry, choice of repertoire, conceptual development of the show — concluded a tour that might not have even happened. The American had to postpone the start of the tour, until 2023, because she contracted a serious bacterial infection that left her hospitalized in the ICU. Fortunately, the recovery was complete and the tour traveled the world until concluding in Brazil.

It was kind of sudden: on July 17th, The Weeknd announced that, less than two months later, he would perform a show at Morumbis stadiumin São Paulo. The singer had not performed live since October of the previous year (the month in which he came to Brazil to play in the capital of São Paulo and Rio) and the new visit to the country took place on a single date, with no connection to any tour.

It really was a special occasion. On Brazil’s Independence holiday, the singer brought together an audience of between 60,000 and 70,000 people (the number was not confirmed by production) to perform songs from his upcoming album Hurry Up Tomorrowwhich hasn’t even come out yet — it will arrive on January 24th — as well as, of course, several other hits. The performance was broadcast live on YouTube for the entire planet and part of the profit from the tickets went to his charity, XO Humanitarian Fund.

It is impossible to deny that Katy Perry He has experienced better times in his career. Even so, he managed to perform a special show as the main attraction of one of the days of the Rock in Rio 2024on the same date that it made available 143her seventh studio album.

The new work had an important place in the repertoire and helped to establish the occasion in history, since, despite the examples on this list, it is rare for an international artist to choose Brazil to set the stage for a launch show. But the performance as a whole proved to be memorable, both due to the American’s parade of hits and the strong enthusiastic reactions elicited from the audience.

Like The Weeknd, it was kind of sudden: on September 27th, the LinkinPark confirmed that he would do a show in São Paulo, in this case at Allianz Parqueless than two months after the announcement. And like Katy Perry, it would be on November 15th, the same day as the release of a new album: From Zerowhich marked the debut of the vocalist Emily Armstrong and the drummer Colin Brittain. There was such great demand for tickets that they booked an extra date, the following night, which was also sold out.

Aware that the country has a strong base of admirers, the group and its team even set up a temporary store in Rock Galleryalso in the capital of São Paulo, and select local fans to listen From Zero before everyone else. The shows were filmed and will be released later in the cinema, as a concert film. The first of the two presentations was broadcast live — in Brazil via Globoplay/Multishowabroad through YouTube.

This was the only one of the five occasions that was not broadcast on TV or the internet. But he deserved it. THE Iron Maiden ended its The Future Past Tour with two presentations also at Allianz Parqueon December 6th and 7th. It would be “just” the end of another tour, if it weren’t for the announcement on the morning of December 7th: the show that would take place hours later would be the drummer’s last Nicko McBrain with the band, after 42 years as one of its members.

At the age of 72, he suffered from health problems in recent years — such as a mini-stroke and cancer — and preferred to withdraw from commitments on the road. He received a series of tributes through speeches by vocalist Bruce Dickinson and loud shouts “Nicko! Nicko!” coming from the audience. Without needing to make a single peep into the microphone, he achieved an extremely loud swan song. Perfect.
