The group in question — whose history has already crossed that of Madman — was named in the list of the best metal albums according to the singer
Especially in rock, when you ask a style icon what his favorite albums are, the choices usually fall on bands older or contemporary with that artist. It’s not like that Ozzy Osbourne.
In 2017, the singer was invited by Rolling Stone USA to name your 10 favorite metal albums of all time. He, who debuted with the Black Saturday in 1970 he practically only chose works published long after the start of his career, both because his band had laid the foundation for his style and because of Osbourne’s constant attention to new talent.
Among the names Madman mentioned was Alice in chainsone of the most popular groups of the grunge movement. When he praises the debut album Faceliftreleased in 1990, the singer declared:
“An incredible debut album. [A música] “The Man in the Box” It’s a classic. [O vocalista] Layne Staley he was kind. It’s a shame he couldn’t control his demons [nota: ele faleceu em 2002 após anos de dependência química].”
Ozzy Osbourne and Alice in Chains
Interestingly, Ozzy’s story has crossed paths with Alice in Chains in more than one situation. The first of these occurred between 1989 and 1992, when his group’s bass was taken over by Mike Inez. In 1993, the musician will join the grunge band, in the vacancy left by Mike Starr.
The other case occurred in the 21st century. In 2004, while recovering from a serious ATV accident, Osbourne decided to record an album of reinterpretations entitled. Undercover. For the album, which was released in 2005, he turned to none other than Jerry Cantrellguitarist and one of the main songwriters of Alice in Chains, to temporarily take over the position he was Zakk Wylde.
Interestingly, the original idea was to record new songs. In an interview with website IgorMiranda.com.brCantrell recalls:
“After Journey of degradation [álbum lançado por Jerry em 2002], Roberto [Trujillo, baixista], Microphone [Bordin, baterista] and we worked on some things together. I think we tried to write something together for Ozzy Osbourne [nota: Cantrell e Bordin gravaram juntos Under Cover, mas antes tiveram sessões criativas ao lado de Trujillo]. Then we played together somewhere else, but we never had the chance to make another record together. [até I Want Blood, de 2024].”
Support with the “foot in the ass”
In turn, Mike Inez revealed in 2017 about Rick Eisen Show (via website IgorMiranda.com.br) who left Ozzy’s band to join Alice in Chains, with whom he continues to this day. In this interview, the bassist revealed how the singer received the news of his departure.
“We were in Reno, Nevada. It was a beautiful sunny, snowy day. I said, ‘Ozzy, I need to talk to you.’ We went outside and I said, ‘The guys from Alice in Chains want me to go to Europe with them.’ he looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘if you don’t go, we’ll have to go to the hospital.’ I asked, ‘why?’ You seem to get along with those guys, they’re a fantastic band.’ To this day we have a great relationship with Ozzy and his family.”
