MusicWhy Rush believes he left European fans ‘down’ after last tour

The band last performed in 2015, five years before Neil Peart’s death

THE Rush reflected on his farewell tour, the R40 Livewhich occurred almost a decade ago.

In an interview with the magazine Classic Rock (via NME), the vocalist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson explained that they intended to visit more countries in 2015, but the drummer Neil Peart refused.

Peart passed away from brain cancer in 2020, aged 67.

“I tried really hard to get more shows, so we could do these extra performances, but I wasn’t successful,” he said. Lee. “I really felt like we let our British and European fans down. To me it felt wrong that we didn’t do it, but Neil [Peart] I was determined to only do 30 shows and that was that.”

He added: “For him, this was already a big commitment, because he didn’t want to do any shows. He didn’t want to do even a single show. So, in his head, he had already given in. He said, ‘I’m going to do 30 shows, don’t ask me for anything else.’”

“I felt like I owed them, the public, an explanation. Part of the reason I went into so much detail about the death of Neil in the book [Geddy Lee: A autobiografia (My Effin’ Life)] it was to let fans know what really happened. That it wasn’t something simple”, he continued.

“This is how the world of Rush became complicated from August 1, 2015 until January 7, 2020, when Neil passed away. These were very unusual, complicated and emotional times.”

Lee further stated: “The fans invested everything of themselves in our band, and I thought they deserved a slightly more direct answer about what happened and how their favorite band came to an end.”

Lifeson also stated: “Neil insisted on playing only a limited number of dates, which prevented a tour of the UK and Europe. I think a dozen more shows would have made us a little more resigned.”

The last shows of Rush in Europe took place in 2013, when the band performed on the tour Clockwork Angels.

“And there was a moment when I think Neil was open to maybe extending the tour and adding a few more shows, then he got a painful infection in one of his feet. I mean, he could barely walk to the stage at one point. They arranged a golf cart to take him to the stage. And he played a three-hour show, with the same intensity he played in all his shows,” he said. Lifeson.

“It was incredible, but I think it was at that point that he decided that the tour would end with the final show in Los Angeles”, he added, referring to the performance on August 1, 2015.
