‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)’ will be the band’s first release after Michelle Zauner’s trip to South Korea

The band’s first new album in four years will be released on March 21st, a few days before Michelle Zaunerfrontwoman of the group, turns 36 years old.

To publicize the project, JapaneseBreakfast released the first single. “Orlando In Love” — which refers to the song “Orlando Innamorato”, by John Cheever — is now available on streaming platforms. Listen below:

For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) was produced by Blake Mills and, second Zaunerinspired by “the plight of Icarus and other similar convicts” in which characters go through “cycles of temptation, transgression, and retribution” (via Stereogum). Find out what the tracklist will be:

(Not so) gap year in South Korea

Michelle Zauner gained notoriety when launching In tears at the market (2022), a memoir in which he explores his relationship with his deceased mother, highlighting the association between food and affection and offering insights into the beginning of his musical career.

To connect even more with her roots, the singer — daughter of a South Korean mother and an American father — announced in 2022 that she would dedicate a year to visiting South Korea. In 2024, she traveled to the country accompanied by her husband and partner band Peter Bradley.

On Instagram, Zauner He showed his daily life by learning the Korean language and doing shows in modest locations.

JapaneseBreakfast passed through Brazil in 2022, when it was included in the line-up of Primavera Sound São Paulo. The day before the performance at the festival, Zauner He was at Casa do Povo, in São Paulo, to promote his book and talk to fans.

Tour

The not-so-sabbatical year of Michelle Zauner seems to have come to an end. In addition to the new album, JapaneseBreakfast already have dates scheduled for the next tour. Brazil still does not appear in the band’s itinerary.

The concert schedule begins in April, in the United States, and ends in September, after a visit to Europe.
