Vehicle transporting the family of the guitarist from the classic period of Engenheiros do Hawaii slid onto the highway due to oil spilled on the road
Notorious for having been a guitarist for Hawaii engineers between 1987 and 1993, Augusto Licks suffered a car accident on BR-116, in Curitiba, capital of Paraná. Although he is already at home recovering, the musician suffered a fractured chest and highlighted the seriousness of the episode.
The news was initially shared by Marcia Jakubiakwife of the artist. They traveled with their daughter, Laura Jakubiak Lickswhen the car they were in slid due to the presence of oil on the road.
Márcia and Laura were not injured, but Augusto suffered the aforementioned injury. The guitarist’s wife declared, through social media:
“Guys, I would like to confirm that yes, Augusto, Laura and I were in a car accident, the only one injured was Augusto who had a broken chest. We are in Curitiba and he is at home recovering well. Unfortunately, we were victims of a criminal act that has been frequent on BR-116 (oil on the road causing accidents and robberies). We appreciate the love of everyone who is sending messages. As soon as possible, he will be back on stage.”
Licks gave more details about what happened in an interview with Gabriel Zorzetto for the newspaper The State of S. Paulo. The artist highlighted that he and his family were “very lucky” and that “it could have been fatal”.
“Bandits pour oil on BR-116, with the aim of overturning trucks and stealing cargo. The car slid until it hit a side wall, spun around and ended up across the road, and I kept turning on the high beams and interior lights so that the cars and trucks would see us. Fortunately no one hit us, I managed to start the car and take it to a nearby gas station.”
Still during the conversation with Estadão, the musician — who has performed alongside the drummer Carlos Maltz and members of the tribute band Engineers Without CREA — he felt pain in the chest area, but did not go to the hospital immediately. When he sought medical help, he discovered that he had injured himself more seriously than imagined. He commented:
“I thought the pain was temporary, I used anesthetic plasters, but it got worse and the CT scan showed a fracture and sinking of the sternum. I’m going to settle down here in Curitiba until the end of the month, hoping to be able to drive again, and hoping that the car returns well from repairs. Fortunately my wife and daughter were unharmed.”

Last year, Augusto Licks and Carlos Maltz performed a series of shows throughout Brazil playing songs by Engenheiros do Hawaii. They made up the band’s most popular lineup alongside the vocalist and bassist. Humberto Gessingerwho has already declared that he has no interest in reuniting with his former colleagues.
