Universal Music seeks a R$1 million deposit in the Brazilian composer’s lawsuit against Adele

Toninho Geraes’ defense criticizes the amount requested and accuses the record company of having attempted to intimidate the composer

The request for judicial deposit generates controversy

Universal Music has requested the deposit of R$1 million as a deposit as part of the plagiarism lawsuit filed by Toninho Geraes against Adele. According to sources connected to the case, the record company justified the request as a measure to avoid losses if the action is rejected in the future.

The request, which concerns a sum believed to be high, aims to ensure that any legal damages are financially compensated.

Toninho’s defense reacts to the request

The composer’s defense classified the measure as an “unreasonable maneuver” and accused Universal of trying to intimidate its client with a value without legal support. In a press release this Wednesday (8/1), lawyer Fredímio Biasotto Trotta underlined that the use of bail is not a common practice in cases with a high probability of success for the accuser.

“The bail request is a smokescreen to divert attention from civil and criminal complaints. Furthermore, it attempts to intimidate the composer with an absurd amount,” he says in the note.

Report of procedural falsehood

Last week, Toninho’s lawyers filed a criminal complaint and an incident of procedural forgery after finding evidence of tampering with the signatures of documents submitted by the defendants. According to the defense, the document that was supposed to contain Adele’s signature featured handwritten scribbles and notes.

The absence of Adele, her protégé Greg Kurstin and representatives of the Beggars’ Group at the conciliation hearing on 19 December was also reported as aggravating by Toninho’s team.

The record company has not yet commented on Toninho Guerra’s defense note. The space remains open for positions and updates on the case.
