The artist died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31, after a fall from the third floor of the Hotel Casa Sur, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Circumstances of the accident

According to Argentine authorities, Liam showed clear signs of severe intoxication on the day of his death. During his stay in the hotel he allegedly consumed nine bottles of whiskey and ordered 13 grams of cocaine. Furthermore, the singer destroyed items in his room and was visited by two companions before being escorted back to his room by hotel staff.

The judge Laura Bruniardowho is leading the case in Argentina, said the singer was “unable to stand” and that his condition required treatment which was not offered to him. Court documents reveal that Payne passed out in the hotel lobby before being taken to his room by a receptionist and two employees, with management’s implicit approval.

“Liam’s altered state of consciousness, combined with access to the balcony, posed a risk that was not mitigated.”, Bruniard said. “The correct protocol would be to leave him in a safe place and be monitored until a doctor arrives.”

Research in Argentina

Five people have been formally charged in the case. Among them are the hotel manager, Gilda Martinothe receptionist Esteban Grassi and Liam’s friend, Rogelio ‘Roger’ Noresin addition to two employees, Brian Paiz AND Ezequiel Pereyraimplicated in drug supply.

Nores, who was with Liam before the crash, is charged with manslaughter for “failure to fulfill one’s duties of care and assistance”. He would leave the singer in the room despite knowing he was unable to take care of himself. Hotel staff are also being held liable for negligence in allowing Liam to be taken to an unsafe environment.

UK reports and context

In the UK the case is also being monitored by the courts. A hearing held on 17 December at Buckinghamshire Crown Court confirmed the diagnosis of “polytrauma” as the cause of death. This medical term refers to multiple traumatic injuries to the body, common in falls from great heights.

The head of the British investigation, Crispin Butlerstressed that further information is still being requested through the Office of Foreign Affairs, delaying the completion of the process.

“Although the investigations in Argentina are still ongoing, it is hoped that detailed information will soon be obtained to clarify how Liam died,” Butler said.
