During an interview with NMEthe director was asked what difficulties he encountered in getting the production off the ground. “It’s one thing to talk to a journalist, but it’s a whole other thing, as a survivor, or someone who’s making very strong accusations, to decide to get in front of the camera to tell this story,” he said. “It was very difficult for Rolling Stone write [sobre a investigação de 2021]; we found that people were even more reticent to record.”
“We approached a lot of people and ended up having a lot of people [conversas confidenciais]” he continued. “When people talked, it was a long journey to translate those initial unofficial conversations into on-camera appearances.”
At another point in the conversation, McGann mentioned similarities of Marilyn Manson with cult leaders: “He had the ability to create extraordinary devotion in people. There is definitely something cult-like about the devotion he managed to inspire in his fans. He had extraordinary charisma. You look at the forums now and there there are countless reports of people openly supporting him. There’s something messianic about him and I think he leaned into that a lot in building his image in the ’90s.”
He’s an intelligent individual and he understood that he could be something for people who felt underrepresented or disenfranchised. He has made a very successful career out of it. Many of [ seus apoiadores] it will be the people who supported him in the 90s and, I think, also the new fans.
