The British singer became known for successes as “how tears go” and “broken English” and had a trajectory marked by reinventions in music and cinema
The career began in the 1960s
Marianne Faithfull died on Thursday (30/1) at the age of 78 in London. The singer’s family confirmed the information in a BBC declaration.
Born on December 29, 1946 in Hampstead, London, Marianne was the daughter of an Officer of the British army and an Austrian mother with aristocratic roots. His parents divorced when he was six years old and his childhood was marked by episodes of tuberculosis.
The singer began his musical trajectory in 1964, performing Cafés de London, where he attracted the attention of the businessman Andrew Log Oldham, then responsible for the Rolling Stones. Shortly after, he published his first success, “As Tears Go By”, written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Oldham. Success has increased his career, leading her to achieve other successes such as “this bird”, “Summer Nights” and “Come and be with me”.
Ascension and romance with Mick Jagger
In the 1960s, Marianne became one of the greatest icons of Swinging London. The British writer and journalist Nik Cohn described the singer as “The Perfect Face” in the biography of Oldham, “2stoned” (2002). “It seemed incredibly virgin and incredibly sensual at the same time, and had a strangely sad smile that someone has ever seen. When he sang, sighed and semi -eightened in poses of infinite obscene purity,” he wrote.
In 1966, after a short marriage with the artist John Dunbar, with whom he had a son, Nicholas, Marianne began a relationship with Mick Jagger. The couple became a constant presence in British tabloids and lived one of the most iconic novels of the time. His proximity to the rolls has directly influenced the band. In 1968, he participated in the film “Rock and Roll Circus”, playing “something better” and inspired compositions of classic stones such as “you cannot always get what you want”, “Wild Horses” and “I Got the Blues”.
Success in music soon led to invitations to the cinema. Marianne appeared by playing herself in “made in the USA” by Jean-Luc Godard (1966), where she sang “while tears range from” a hair. Two years later, he experienced the main role of “The Motorcycle Girl” (1968), together with Alain Delon, appearing on the scene in a fashionist and naked fashion leather suit. In 1969, he played Ophelia in the film version of “Hamlet”, directed by Tony Richardson, a role he also played on stage.
Scandal, collapse and dependence
In February 1967, Marianne, Jagger and Keith Richards were the goal of a police operation in Riclands’ House in Redlands. The singer, who was enveloped only in a coat for the skin, became the target of scandalous titles. The arrest of drugs for drug possession did not prevent Rolling Stones’s success, but Marianne’s personal life started collapsing.
The relationship with Jagger ended in 1970, aggravating a phase of emotional instability. Marianne suffered a spontaneous abortion, lost her son’s guard and tried suicide in the same year. The singer described her song “Sister Morphine” – written with Jagger and Richards and also published by Rolling Stones on the album “Sticky Fingers” (1971) – as “My Self -Portrait in A Dark Mirror, my Gothic work in miniature, my celebration of death “.
In the following years, the singer developed a deep dependence on heroin and lived in a road situation in London, far from the music industry.
Back with “broken English” and reinvention
Far from the spotlight, Marianne tried to return to music in a bizarre duet with David Bowie in 1973, where she appeared on TV dressed as a singing “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher. Without the expected result, in 1975 he appealed to a country album that nobody listened to.
So the singer was punk of life. As he lived in London and fighting heroin dependence, he lost his virgin appearance, his voice was Rauca and started walking with angry young people like Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and The Banshees and John Lydon (Johnny (Johnny Rotten),. Sexuals. Marianne has absorbed influences from this medium and incorporated elements of punk and new wave to the sound of her next album, “Broken English”, which marked its triumphant return to relevance in 1979. The aggression and rough tone of Album, especially on the track, “Why do you do it?” beginning of his career.
“Broken English” produced his first indication in Grammy. The album also inspired an experimental short of Derek Jarman (“Caravaggio”), one of the most legendary directors of the British Underground, who recorded three tracks (“Witches Song”, “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” and “Broken English “) Conceptual shot in Super-8. The work is one of the first known examples of a visual album – a concept that has become popular only in the era of Beyoncé, with “Lemonade” (2016).
Last years and inheritance
In the following years, he reinvented himself as an interpreter of jazz and blues, releasing praised albums as “Strange Weather” (1987), produced by Hal Willner. He even recorded with Metallica, creating support items in the track “The Memory Remains”, from the album “Reload” (1997), one of the most surprising elements of the song. But his most interesting work in recent years has been “Before The Poison” (2005), a partnership with two artists who influenced, Nick Cave and Pj Harvey.
Other albums followed, such as “Give My Love to London” (2014) and “She Walks in Beauty” (2021). The latter was a collaboration with Warren Ellis, known for his work as a violinist, composer and frequent partner of Nick Cave in bad seeds. In the album, Faithfull recites the classic poems of authors such as Lord Byron, John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, accompanied by the instrumental plots of Ellis, with further contributions from Nick Cave and Brian Eno.
In addition to music, the artist has resumed participation in films such as “Marie Antoinet” (2006), by Sofia Coppola and “Paris, Te Amo” (2006), by Gus Van Sant. He also lent his voice to one of Denis Villeneuve’s film “Dune” (2021).
Marianne wrote three autobiographies throughout her life, in detail her journey between celebrities and decay and her struggle to reconstruct her career. His son Nicholas is his only heir.
