Rapper won the best rap album award on the Grammy 2025, becoming the third woman to win the category
Dochii shone at the Grammy 2025 by becoming the third woman in history to win the award Best rap album with Alligator Bites Never Heal. The ceremony took place on Sunday night (2), and the rapper was also nominated for Best rap performance and Revelation artist.
“I put my heart and soul in this mixtape”said Dockii, thrilled, upon receiving the prize, which was delivered by Cardi bwinner of the same category in 2019. “I opened my life. I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety and God told me that it would be rewarded.”
The artist’s victory is a milestone in the history of Grammy. Until then, just LAURYN HILL (The MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL1999) and Cardi b (Invasion of Privacy2019) had taken the trophy in the category, traditionally dominated by men. In addition, Dochii became the first artist to win the prize with a mixtape.
But who is Dochii and how did she get here?
From Childhood to Star
Born Jaylah Ji’myya Hickmon in COVER, FLORIDAin 1998, DOCHII grew up surrounded by music. Created in a Christian family, she had her first contact with art inside the church, where she began to sing in the choir.
Since I was a child, I wrote rhymes and danced, but the school was a difficult environment for the young woman. To the 11 yearsAfter suffering bullying, Jaylah created an alter ego to strengthen himself: Dochii.
“‘I’m Dochii.’ It was something that just came to me “told in an interview with Volture. “Jaylah may have been intimidated, but Dochii would not accept it. My behavior has changed completely, and that name has stayed with me ever since.”
The rapper began to explore different musical styles and dedicated herself to dance and theater. Dockii even participated in hip hop competitions and musical theater in high school.
The beginning in the soundcloud and the explosion on Tiktok
To the 18 yearsDochii began to publicize his first songs in Soundcloud and in Youtube. The experimental ranges mixed rap, R&B and alternative pop.
In 2019, the artist launched her first independent compilation, Coven Music Session, Vol. 1which soon caught the attention of the underground audience.
But it was in 2021 that his name exploded to the general public, thanks to the track “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake”who viralized in Tiktok. With autobiographical lyrics and a dynamic flow, music became a hymn for young people who identified with their journey of self -discovery.
Success attracted the eyes of the industry, and soon DOCHII signed a contract with the Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE)becoming the First Rapper Woman of the label, known for launching icons as Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
Ascension and Grammy
In 2022Dochii released his first EP under a big seal: She/her/Black Bitchwho presented the hit “What it is (block boy)”collaboration with Kodak Black.
In the following years, the rapper has gained important spaces in music:
- Opened shows for Beyoncé in Renaissance World Tour (2023).
- Came out on tour with Doja Cat in Scarlet Tour.
- Received compliments from Kendrick Lamarwho called her “The most amazing of today”.
- Participated in the album of Tyler, The Creatorin the track “Balloons”.
- Collaborated with Katy Perry in music “I’m His, he’s mine”debuting the track in an iconic performance in the Vmas.
The height of his trajectory came in 2024with the release of the award -winning Mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal.

After the Grammy, Dockii has already released a new single, “Nosebleeds”a track of thanks to the fans and their journey. The cover of the single features a golden gramophone, celebrating its historical victory.
